PUBLIC FAREWELL
MR SAVAGE'S DEPARTURE FROM CHRISTCHURCH. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association.) ’ CHRISTCHURCH, June 2. Nearly 2000 persons went to the railway station this evening to say goodbye to the Prime Minister, Mr Savage, who left for Wellington after four days in Christchurch. When the Ministerial car arrived at the station the Prime Minister’s party was greeted with cheers. Mr. Savage, preceded by Mr. Sullivan. made his way slowly to the platform. Men and women pushed and jostled in an attempt to catch a glimpse of Mr Savage as he went to the Ministerial carriage. There cheering was renewed. Mr Savage addressed the crowd, thanking them for his reception in Christchurch and the warmth of his farewell. Though the crowd was compressed into a small space on the narrow platform, no mishaps were reported. The engine-driver moved the train very slowly away, to make certain of avoiding injury to those who were pushed close to the carriages.
