WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION. INTERESTING B GRADE GAMES. (By “Shuttle.”) With a New Zealand Test Badminton team to tour Australia in July and August, considerable interest is being taken in the New Zealand top rankers, and the Wairarapa Association at the moment figures prominently in the higher - badminton circles. The Association is fortunate in having P. Hawksworth and Mrs Hawksworth among its players. The record of Hawksworth is one the Association is justly proud of. and the inclusion of these two players in the Australian team should result in the raising of the general standard of play on their return. The Wairarapa Badminton Association is • the sixth largest association in New Zealand, of a total of 12 associations. Ten clubs are affiliated in the Wairarapa this year, the results of the B grade inter-club competitions played being as follows: — Results at a Glance. St Matthews A 12, Methodist B 0. Martinborough 8, St Matthews B 4. Red Star 9. Methodist A 3. Regent 7, Nomads A 5. Hugos beat Nomads B by default. St. Matthew’s A v Methodist B. This match was too one-sided to produce interesting badminton, but was a good work out for the St Matthew s team’s new combinations. The chief weaknesses were shown in the men’s doubles, but some adjustments will correct the position. The Methodist combinations lacked understanding, which may be attributed to several first-year players being in the team. The Regent-Nomads match proved an extremely interesting contest, Regent being fortunate in having some strong men’s doubles combinations. The experiences of teams who journey to Martinborough are that the trip is thoroughly worth while, the hospitality of the Martinborough Club being outstanding for its warmth. The team from the St Matthew’s Club spent a thoroughly enjoyable evening, and some closely contested games were witnessed. Methodist A were at a disadvantage when playing a team of the ability of Red Star, as their last year’s team was split for two teams in the competition the result being that both teams were weak, instead of there being one strong and one weak team. The games were one-sided, with the exception of the men's doubles, Methodist having by far the superior combination.
