FLOTATION OF DIGGERS MARKET. A MASTERTON VENTURE. At an enthusiastic meeting of ‘‘Diggers” and their wives held last evening, it was decided to set up a board of directors to successfully float a Diggers’ Market to be held on July 14. It was reported that applications for shares were pouring in and the directors decided that all profits be handed to the R.S.A. for its visiting Australian Diggers’ entertainment fund. The floating of this concern will give the public of Masterton an unique opportunity to buy what is wanted and to give away what is not wanted and also to provide voluntary employment for a large number of our citizens. -
It was decided to discard all regulations governing the forty-hour week and to encourage all interested to work overtime in the interests of the market. Import restrictions notwithstanding, the ladies’ committee reported that produce, cake, sweet, jumble and fancy goods stalls will be heavily stocked.
Mr J. D. O’Connor, well-known as late Postmaster at Masterton, was appointed organiser, and those who have not met him will soon have the opportunity. In accordance with the rules governing the market any person donating more than £5 at any one time will be fined ss. So keen is the interest in the market that the directors had to draw lots for seats at the forthcoming meeting of the board.
