Local Contractors

ONLY THE BEST OF MATERIAL AND WORKMANSHIP Tenders for erecting both these new batches of houses have been called locally, just as was the practice for the houses already built or being built. Apart, therefore, from the fact of easing the housing shortage in the town, work is given to many local men. The work is largely standardised, certain men carrying out the same class of work in various houses, such as laying the foundations, putting up the frame, placing the flooring boards in position, putting in baths, locks, etc. This'system works out economically for both the contractors and the Government and the Department does not press for any one house to be finished off, although it may require very little to complete it. Rigid Government inspection ensures only the best of materials and workmanship. Such local contractors as Mr Dagg of the Master ton Joinery Works, who carried out the joinery work for the houses now being built, Mr Tagg who was the successful tenderer for painting, etc., Mr Masters who controlled the fibrous plastering, and Mr J. Bouzaid, who secured the contract for the electrical installation —all have done their best work with the best of materials. Similarly, too, with the other contractors—there has been only high-class work done on every job and the finished homes are a tribute to the work of our local contractors.
