INTOXICATED MOTORIST
FARM HAND FINED .£l6. Charged with having been drunk while in charge of . a motor car in Dixon Street, Masterlcn. on May 20, A. Y. Stevenson. a farm hand, aged 23 years, appeared in the Masterton Court today before Mr. H. P. Lowry. S.M. He was convicted and fined £lO and was prohibited from obtaining a licence lor 'l2 months. He was also ordered to pay medical expenses amounting to £l. and 10s court costs. In evidence, the accused said that on the day in question ho was at Carterton with a party of friends, where he consumed four small glasses of beer. He left Carterton between 4.30 and 5 p.m. and on me way home helped to tow into Masterton a car driven by a woman, which had broken down. On arrival at Masterton he and the parly •went to a friend's home, where more I lienor was consumed. Accused became 'intoxicated and feeling such, decided i:o go out io pull himself together. He I walked up and down the street a few I times. After a while he felt he had to sit down and as he had no wish to return to the house in the condition ho was in. he got into the car. He had 'no intention of driving the car and was jeprawlcd across the from seat when him police arrived. To Senior-Sergeant G. A. Doggett, accused said he had intended going to a dance later in the evening, but he [was going to hire a taxi as the distance 'was not very great.
