The New South Wales Government has decided to launch a prosecution under the Monopolies Act against the Council of Brick Manufacturers. Amending legislation necessary will be passed at once. The Government’s action is a sequel to the public inquiry into the price of bricks. The judge found that brickmakers had combined unfairly to raise the price of bricks and had also cornered supplies; since when there has been an insistent public demand for a prosecution. The Government has also tightened up the Gaming Act and imprisonment is now provided for second offenders. The police say hotel and street illicit betting has almost disappeared in recent months, but telephone betting has increased and remains to be copea with. '
