TURF NEWS & NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE AGOG FANCIED FOR GREAT NORTHERN HURDLES SURVOY CANDIDATE FOR STEEPLECHASE (By “CABBINE.”)

Excellent acceptances have been received for the first day of the Auckland Racing Club's winter meeting which will commence at Ellerslie on June 3 and will continue on June 5 and 7. Twenty-three owners have accepted for the Great Northern Steeplechase while twenty are still left in the Great Northern Hurdles. The Cornwall Handicap has also attracted twentythree. In the event of the number of starters for the Jervois Handicap exceeding the safety number, the race will be run in two divisions and the total prize-money increased to £5OO. Dividends will be paid as follows: The winner of, or the horses dead-heating for, first place in the first division, for the purpose of the win pool will be deemed to have dead-heated for first place with the winners of or the horses deadheating for first place in the second division. The amount of the place pool will be divided into as mqny equal parts as there are horses placed in the first two places in the respective divisions and allotted accordingly. The totalisator for both divisions will close prior to the first division being run. Details are:— GREENLANE STEEPLECHASE. About two miles and a half. Hanover 11 6 Bells of Bow 9 8 John Charles 11 5 Mana 9 0 Survoy 10 6 Car Leaf 9 0 Wasp 10 6 Right Royal ..9 0 London 910 King Stroud 9 0 Mahala 9 8 Tea Chat 9 0 The top-weight Hanover was in a good position at Ellerslie when he fell and he also fell recently at Manawatu. John Charles in view of his recent successes at Manawatu in the steeplechase event will probably have plenty of admirers and with only 11.5 up must be hard. Survey has won two hurdle races recently and has also been placed in a steeplechase at Ellerslie, and is likely to be in keen demand. Wasp won the Melville Hack and Hunters Steeplechase at Te Rapa.. Right Royal was unfortunate in running down the fences at Te Rapa but is expected to run a good race. Of the rest London and Tea Chat may be supported. The fancies might include John Charles. Hanover. Survoy or Right Royal.

There is no end of prospects in the Jervois Handicap, and the punter will need to be in good shape to sort the field out. May Song is now showing form and will probably be liked by a large section of the public. In view of Bronwen’s good displays that horse might be well favoured. Raana is a recent winner and if the going is hard should not be far away when the numbers go up. An improver is Ramleh who some will consider hard to beat,

Bronze Moth ran encouraging races at Te Rapa and will not be without support. Among the eight stone horses Ringshot has a fourth while Bonnybelle has a third in their only starts this quarter. High Delight has shown glimpses of form and is due to deliver the goods any time. Public opinion may favour Bronze Moth. Rocinfl High Delight or May Song. PENROSE HURDLE RACE. One mile and three-quarters. ■

The top-weights, Loombination and Knight of Australia, should give good accounts of themselves and King Musk beat a smart field at Pukekohe recently. He is now in better condition and will be well backed. The brilliant fencing of Electric Flash will carry that lady a long way. Ureklaw is a form horse and as he is just coming right he may not be far behind at the home turn. Because he has been schooling well Little Briton will be popular. He is carrying a light weight and should prove a hard nut to crack. Lack of speed might be Irish Comet’s trouble but two good novices from the same stable are contained in Awhiowhio and Ellanui. Best support may go to Little Briton. Loombination. Electric Flash. GREAT NORTHERN HURDLES. Two miles and a half.

At 9.10 Agog is a great bet and there is no doubt about his staying ability. Top-weight Erination is a great weight carrier and will be with the best all the way. Charade is fit and if the ground is heavy En Tour might be to the fore. Royal Dance has made a wonderful improvement and in his last four hurdle races has collected three wins and a third. Pyrenees won at the Auckland midsummer meeting and is a fine jumper.’ He loves the hard going and will probably give the top-weights something to think about. Bryce Street, Sporting Song and Smilin’ Thru will all be well in public favour, but most support may come for Agog. Royal Dance. Pyrenees. CORNWALL HANDICAP. One mile and a quarter.

much weight to carry although he is sure to be well, backed. Some , may prefer his stablemate Valamito who is not carrying near the weight. If King Rey was in form he would be the choice of the bunch but seven starts this season has failed to produce a win. Cheval de Voice, last year’s winner, is carrying more weight this time however, but will be a candidate as he has been running well. Placed three times in his last six engagements will make Gold Vaals popular. If he is right Balinavar will take some heading off as he is a good horse. Since Christmas Galilee has returned to. form and she was successful in her last three starts. Should the track be soft Valmint will not go to the barrier without a fair share of public opinion in his favour, and he should be there at the end. The public might support Cheval de Volee. Valmint. Round Up. HUNT CLUB HURDLES. Two miles. Kittle 9 7 Windsor Lass. 9 0 British Bridegroom .. 9 0 Sovereign 9 7 Tupeotu 9 0 Green Label 9 0 Kittle appears to be the best of a poor lot for the Hunt Hurdles. British Sovereign was in second place to Agog in the Northland Hurdles at Whangarei when he fell. Windsor Lass is a good horse over the battens and showed form last season. Those favoured might include Kittle. British Sovereign. Windsor Lass. MEMBERS’ HANDICAP. Six furlongs.

Black Thread, who has proved himself to be one of the best sprinters in the North Island, will be strongly supported, as will Whirling who is a good winter horse. Maori Song won nicely at Te Rapa and, if the going is at all heavy will be a public fancy. Young Paddon may find himself in need of a v race or two yet. A model of consistency Prince Acre is sure to be liked, while Marie’s Acre appears to be coming on again. Erndale has been successful in two of his six starts this year, and might find a place in the public’s favour. Aero King is expected to race well, but the favourites might be Black Thread. Maori Song. t Prince Acre. GREAT NORTHERN STEEPLECHASE. About three miles and three-quarters.

In spite of carrying 11.13 Erination will capture strong public support in the big event of the day. Survoy, who will be ridden by A. E. Ellis, is another who is e’xpected to carry a lot of the public’s money. A thing that will be in Survoy’s favour is the fact that he is good when the going is hard or soft. John Charles is a prospect, as is All Irish. If John Charles starts'in this event only he will have a big following. Allegretto is a first class horse, but has been hampered by unsoundness. En Tour is another likely prospect as he is a well seasoned stayer and a good jumper. Of the newcomers, Power Chief looks the best bet and has a couple of recent wins to his credit. Mio Lume looked like a winner when he fell in the Te Rapa Steeplechase and is expected to go well. Those in demand may be Survoy. Erination. Mio Lume or John Charles.
