SEARCHING FOR FORMER CIVILISATIONS. Scientists are constantly searching for traces of civilisations which existed many years ago, and which have left evidence buried far beneath our modern cities. A gigantic drill has been working for some time in the centre of Rome, probing to see what lies 6000 feet beneath the great city. The drill has already reached a depth of 1200 feet, and has penetrated into the pliocene strata which lies beneath the first 250 feet of alluvial soil. Many fossil animals and plants have been brought to light which have gone to enrich the collections in the Italian Geological Museum. It will be some months before the drill reaches the maximum depth and the secrets of primeval days are fully uncovered-
