PEACE & COLONIES

BRITISH LABOUR VIEWS CONFERENCE RESOLUTION. RETURN TO THE POSITION OF TRUSTEE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, May 30. The Labour Conference, debating international affairs, passed a resolution expressing concern over the prolonged delay in the conclusion of the Russian pact, condemned the Governments record and sought the rebuilding of a real League of Nations. Mr Noel Baker declared that ths Government had destroyed the League of Nations, and did not understand the ruthless forces with which it had been dealing. He added that Mr Neville Chamberlain had one foot in the eighteenth century and the other in Berlin. Mr Ernest Bevin said “Economic stabilisation is only obtainable if we are prepared to limit our sovereignty and build up a great commonwealth, in which the United States of America would be a partner. Britain must return to the position of trustee for the colonies, most of which were ‘pinched’ for war material and for strategic purposes, while the interest of the natives have never been considered.” He added: “Now there is an opportunity to settle the -colonial problem on a new basis. We should pool world resources, and offer the peoples of middle Europe and Japan more than they can win by war.”
