TURF NEWS & NOTES

DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB’S MEETING

REVIEW OF FIELDS

(By ‘’CARBINE.”)

Fields well up to the usual standard have been accepted for the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club's three-day winter fixture which opens at Wingatui on Saturday, June 3, and will be continued on Monday. June 5, while there will be a break until the following Saturday before the meeting will be brought to a close. This meeting will be the first in the South Island for.the season at which winter weights will prevail and there is not one race in which an apprentice allowance can be claimed. Win-and-place betting will, as usual, be the mode of speculation.

TAHUNA HACK AND HUNTERS’ STEEPLES HANDICAP. About two miles and a quarter. Pandine 1012 Rifle Range .. 9 8 Corban 10 1 La Boca 9 5 Sunny Comet 913 M. Balboa .... 9 3 El Caballo .... 912 Golden Glow 9 0 McHeath 9 10 Top-weight Pandine scored a handsome victory in the Ritchie Steeplechase at the Southland Racing Club’s winter meeting, but the increased weight may make a decided difference. Corban who ran second to Pandine in the same race should be there at the finish and the weight increase in this case is not so great as that regarding Pandine. McHeath, who ran third to the two top-‘weights, has also increased slightly in weight but the difference is not much. The rest of the field have not run for some time and most support will probably come for Pandine. Corban McHeath. TRIAL STAKES. J, Six .furlongs. Blue Dawn .... 813 Neptune 811 Lights Out .... 813 Lower Deck .. 811 Ascent 811 Rosenor Lass 811 Black Bard .... 811 Islay Downs ..8 0 Boloyna 811 King Gustavo 8 0 Foxy 811 Sir Amyas .... 8 0 Freecourse .... 8 11 Unknown material comprises the Trial Stakes, some of whom have shown little form, but on the whole investors will be in the dark. Boloyna, a full brother to Alma, is well thought of but has not yet displayed anything out of the ordinary. On breeding he should prove a prospect. Of the rest King Gustavo has good credentials and Islay Downs might go well. The best supported might be

Boloyna. ' King Gustavo. . Islay Downs. ... OTAGO HURDLE HANDICAP. I One mile and three-quarters. Travenna 11 9 Mount Vai .... 9 8 Recollection .. 11 0 Metal Bird .... 9 5 Fireguard 1013 Baitruin 9 0 Pink Robe .... 10 0 Ocean Singer 9 0 Last Link 911 Vantoon 9 0 Dividend 910 Although the stakes are not high the Otago Hurdles Handicap is the most important hurdles decided in the Otago province. Fireguard, who was the runner-up in the Grand National Hurdles last year finished fifth at Timaru, but now has 61bs. less to carry. However, his form suggests a race or two before he is in top gear again. Travenna went well at Timaru and is now carrying 21bs. less on his back. Recollection will be liked and the race is not beyond him. Pink Robe and Mount Vai will be supported by some. Well supported horses might be Fireguard. Travenna. Recollection or Pink Robe.

BRIGHTON HANDICAP. One mile. Straightdell ..9 7 Merry Simon 8 5 Hunting Doctor Duthie 8 4 Chorus 9 2 Astral Flash ..8 1 Triple Cone .. 9 0 Sunny Jean .. 8 1 The Wrecker 812 Drinkup 8 1 Vanity Queen 8 7 Spearthrust ..8 0 Pol Roger .... 8 6 Gay Vixen .... 8 0 Straightdell, who is carrying topweight, ran second to Hunting Chorus at Invercargill and both should give good accounts of themselves. Hunting Chorus might find the increase in weight harder than at Southland. Triple Cone ran the top-weights a close third and is in good form. Pol Roger has had a first, a third and a fourth in the last five starts and should receive public support. Vanity Queen scored nicely in the Bluff. Handicap at the Southland meeting but her weight has risen over a stone. Of the others, Spearthrust, Drinkup and Merry Simon might be favoured. Public support will possibly go to Straightdell. Hunting Chorus. Pol Roger.

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE ■ AND COURSE

the last two starts is expected to give a good showing. Thermidor scored a second at South Canterbury and will be well supported.’ A second to Alma at Invercargill will probably make that horse favourite, while Second Innings is due for a win, having taken a first, second and two thirds in the last four starts. Petersham scored at South Canterbury and will probably be well supported. Night Hawk, who was left on the second day at Washdyke, will be well up at the finish. Those fancied might include Rabble. Second Innings. Thermidor or Night Hawk. WINTER HANDICAP. Six furlongs. Silver Streak 9 13 Norseman 8 4 Rebel Mate ..9 9 Lady Leigh ..8 3 Nightcalm 9 7 Fleet Street .. 8 3 Top Row 9 0 Flagman 8 1 Roy Bun 8 Waitoru 8 0 Phalanx 810 Palady 8 0 Lord Nuffield 8 0 Peacock 8 0 Spanish Lad ..8 8 On Call 8 0 Strip 8 7 Silver Slipper 8 0 Valantua 8 6 Silver Streak scored a second at Washdyke and although he made a dash about 100 yards from home in the Seadown Handicap he did not make the grade. Nightcalm has shown consistent form lately and was well rewarded with victory in the Seadown Handicap. He won impressively. Rebel Mate is certain to be supported and' Roy Bun with two wins in the last two starts should be up with the field over the last stretch. Silver Slipper and Valantua have been handy recently and are due to be placed higher up. Others who might find favour are Lady Leigh, Fleet Street and Flagman, who has two recent wins. Most support may come, however, for Nightcalm. Roy Bun, Silver Streak. ST. CLAIR HANDICAP. Six furlongs. Astaire 9 5 Gusto 8 7 Skyrena 9 4 Green Boa .... 8 5 Combat 9 3 Violenta 8 4 Vocal 9 2 Astral Flash 8 2 Epic 813 Aravane 8 1 Kippen 811 Silver Choir ..8 0 Lady Sincere 810 Lord Puck .... 8 0 Skyrena has been performing well lately and will be in demand. Astaire has not won since the Oamaru meeting. Green Boa impressed at Oamaru in March and although he has raced three times unsuccessfully since should have a-good-chance.- Favourites may be Skyrena. Astaire. Green Boa. DUNEDIN MEETING ACCEPTANCES FOR SATURDAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, May 30.
