The Governor-General and Lady Galway are spending a short fishing holiday at the Spa Hotel, Taupo. Mr N. Martin, of the. Brooklyn school, has been appointed headmaster at Carterton.

Mr R. H. Nimmo has been elected chief of the Wellington Caledonian Society.

The death is announced in a Press Association telegram from Dunedin- of Mr Ernest Harraway, a widely-known personality in the New Zealand bowling world, aged 61. He was a member of the Dunedin club for. 30 years. He won three New Zealand titles —the pairs, in 1918; the singles, in 1920; and the fours, in 1926.

The Hon P. Fraser, Minister of Education, returned to Wellington from the south at the weekend. He left Wellington for the Waikato by the Limited express last night. He officially opened the Waikato Winter Show in Hamilton today. The Minister, who will visit Te Awamutu tomorrow, will return to Wellington on Thursday. The Very Rev Father James Hanrahan, parish priest of St Joseph’s, Papanui, has been appointed parish priest of the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Addington, in succession to 'the Very Rev Father 'J. P. O’Connor, who died recently. Till the annual diocesan appointments in February next, St Joseph’s Papanui, will be in charge of the Marist Fathers at St Bede’s College.

Mr S. Jermy, who has been Stationmaster at Mauriceville for over seven years, has received notice of his transfer to Ohakune, and will leave shortly for that place. During their residence in Mauriceville Mr and Mrs Jermy have associated themselves with various movements having for their object the advancement of the district, and their departure will be a distinct loss to Mauriceville. The Rt Hon M. J. Savage, Prime Minister, left Wellington last night for Christchurch, where he will make an inspection of manufacturing industries. He will visit three factories today, four tomorrow, and three more on Friday. It is likely that he will speak on Thursday at several meetings in support of the Labour candidate contesting the Christchurch South by-election for the House of Representatives. Mr Savage will return to Wellington on, Saturday morning.

Mr J. Brown, deputjy-mayor, was the only nominee for the mayoralty of Te Puke. Mr Brown, who was formerly manager of the Te Puke branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., served as a member of the town board at its inception in 1911 and was elected to the borough council at the last election. His being elected mayor necessitates a by-election for the council vacancy, the third to be held within a month.

At the annual meeting of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society last night the following officers were elected:—Patron, his Excellency the Go-vernor-General, Viscount Galway; president, Mr L. O. H. Tripp; vicepresidents, the Hon Sir, Hubert Ostler, Mr L. G. Reid, Mr-E. Riddiford, Mr W. H. Field; council, Dr G. F. V. Anson, Messrs J. S. Fleming, H. Goodwin. A. J. Seed, S. T. Tisdall, T. R. Boyes, J. E. Ramsey, W. A. R. Jones, D. J. Gibbs.

The resignation of Professor James Adamson from the chair of Roman law, jurisprudence, constitutional law. international law and conflict of laws was accepted with regret at a recent meeting of the Victoria University College council. The chairman and other speakers expressed regret that Professor Adamson, who has held the chair for 31 years, was obliged, through ill-health to tender his resignation. The college owed much to Professor Adamson for the manner in which he had carried out his duties over that long period.
