GOLFING NOTES

MAHUNGA CLUB PLAYERS GOOD CARDS RETURNED, COMPETITION GAMES DURING NEXT WEEKEND. A series of competition games is to be held by the Mahunga Golf Club during the King's Birthday weekend. In all probability the permanent greens will be opened for the occasion. The course is in splendid order now that all the swamp area has been drained. L. J. Thompson, who has returned two good' cards so far this season, which will necessitate a considerable reduction in his handicap, is a particularly long driver. If he could only strengthen his short game it should riot be long before he is on single handicap. A beginner of some promise is Gordon Duff, whose first card of the season on Saturday was a net 65. Although he has previously played golf this is the first occasion on which he has taken up the game seriously. If he can give some attention to the game he will probably earn' a . good handicap. Playing a good, sound game on Saturday, C. Sandbeck, in his first round of the season, returned a net 66 off the limit handicap. He is deserving of a reduction in handicap.

H. Hill recorded a 69 on Saturday on 18/14. handicap. He is playing a good game and also deserves a handicap reduction. A prominent player last year, W. N. A. Hosking, on his showing so far this season, promises to maintain his good form. One of the most consistent players in the club is R. Lendrum, whose rounds of 71, 71 and 70 (71 is par for the course) speak for themselves. The best card returned by A. O. Jones this season is a net 70. If he can break the par again he will be entitled to a reduction in handicap. lan McFarlane is a player who needs watching very carefully. He plays a particularly good game and should have no difficulty in reducing his handicap.

V. E. Burridge played to his handicap on Saturday. Last year he won the net aggregate-and if he maintains his form he will be a player to be reckoned with.

A newcomer to the club, M. A. Martin, has returned cards of 74 and 71 net. His game 'is improving.

j. W. Dove' and L. A. Curtin, by returning scores of net 71’s in their first rounds of the season, show that they are'playing to their ■■ handicap. Another player shaping well is F. R. Brown; whose form is well up to his 18 handicap. If he can' give a little more thought to his game he should shortly earn a reduction. W. Boyce is a consistent player with rounds of 75, 71, 72 and 71, to his credit. He is on a limit mark but it should not take him long to earn a reduction.

Although J. Morris went round on Saturday in one' above par, his performance was not as good as that of the previous Saturday, when he completed the course in nine below par. Another good card will entitle' him' to a reduction.

W. Johansen, who earned the biggest reduction in handicap over the last season, is playing a particularly steady game this year. So far he has played round about his handicap, which is 12. Good sound golf is being played by W. W. Hendry, who is on 8 handicap. A new player, D. Kennedy, who earned a reduction of two to his handicap on the previous Saturday, did not play to it last Saturday but no doubt he will come back:

A very steady player, G. B. Williams, is playing round about his handicap. G. R. Ward is practising very consistently and should have no difficulty in returning better scores. A player who has improved considerably of late is J. G. McFarlane. A. E. Friend, the lowest handicap player in the club, has been returning good cards, though he is not quite up to his handicap. Two new players, R. Hendry and R. B, McPherson, both on the 16/12 mark, are turning on sound golf. Good golf is being staged by A. H. Ward, who has already reduced his handicap this year by two strokes. E. Jenkins plays a good attentive game and has already earned a reduction of two in his handicap.
