WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
UPPER PLAIN MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Upper Plain Women’s Institute was held recently -at the residence of Mrs Mannel, when Mrs Gordon Dagg presided over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with the aspirations and the prayer for peace in the world. Mrs W. Taplin gave a very interesting report of the first annual council meeting held in Masterton recently. Mrs Condon gave a demonstration on rug making from sugar bags and old woollen clothing which proved very interesting.- She was heartily thanked for her demonstration. Mrs E. Taplin spoke interestingly on a trip abroad and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The competitions for the month were won as follow: —Smocked gingham apron: Mrs Steer. 1; Mrs Laing, 2; Mrs C. R. Jones, 3. Best bloom: Mrs Jones, 1; Mrs Scott. 2; Mrs W. Taplin, 3. Ginger nuts: Miss Cohen, 1; Mrs W. Taplin, 2; Mrs Jones. 3. Pickles: Mrs Mannel, 1; Mrs Jones, 2. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Edwards. Dagg and Taplin. A very happy gathering was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem.
