Ground improvements about the buildings and Cornwall Street entrance had been carried out under the direction of the Public Works Department (No 13 scheme) during the last year. Last year the board received from Mrs Walter Nops the gift of half an acre of land to provide tennis courts for College House. To provide for further exten • sion and development, the Minister of Education bought 15 acres adjoining the main grounds. The purchase was facilitated by some beneficiaries of the Renall Estate bearing some of the cost. One paddock of the area was left fallow during the summer and had now been sown for- an additional spojts area. The remainder was being used as a small experimental farm and would become increasingly useful to the college. The Government valuation of the College property was as follows: Improvements, £68,857, unimproved value £4,552, total £73,409. Through the generosity of the Trustees, the boys of the agriculture course had been ob - taining practical experience on the Wairarapa Training Farm at Penrose. During last year the number of boarders at College House reached a total of 30, while this year the number had been 38. The Pipe Band creditably competed in the provincial contest at Dannevirke and at the Dominion contest in Christchurch. On Labour Day, a shooting team from the cadet corps took part in the army rifle meeting at Hastings. During the last calendar year, the librarian had issued 5,442 books and 3,023 copies of class sets. The Trust Lands Trust had made a grant towards the running of the library. The Parents’ Association during its first year undertook many activities and had been of much help to the board in promoting the welfare of the new college. It was gratifying to know that a Wairarapa College Old Girls’ Association had been formed. Thanks were extended to the Principal and staff for their splendid co-operation and assistance 'during the year; to those who had made gifts to the college, to the members of the board and the Press. Committees for the ensuing yearwere elected as follow: — Education: Mrs C. C. Jackson. Messrs W. R. Nichol, Mr Alex Donald (convenor). Finance: Messrs A. Owen Jones (convenor), L. T. Daniell and W. H. Saunders.

Works: Messrs F. C. Daniell (convenor), L. J. Taylor, and P. M. Smith. Executive: Messrs W. R. Nicol (chairman), A. Owen Jones, F. C. Daniell and Alex Donald.

It was reported that the secondary school pay a visit to the college commencing on May 29.

CHAIRMAN’S ANNUAL REPORT. DEVELOPMENTS DURING YEAR. “The equivalent full-time day roll on March 1 this year was 524, as compared with 521 for last year." stated Mr W. R. Nicol, chairman of the Wairarapa College Board of Governors in his annual report to the board last night. The total number of day pupils enrolled during the year ending December 31, 1938, was 538. For the year ending December 31, 1938. 334 evening school pupils were enrolled. Classes in woodwork and dressmaking were commenced for Maori students at Hurunui-O-Rangi Pa and were being continued this year, Mr Nicol stated in his report. Both day and evening pupils of the college were successful in a wide range of public examinations and brought credit to the Principal and his staff.
