FARMERS PROTEST
HEAVY TRAFFIC LICENCES. APPEAL TO COUNTY COUNCIL. (“Times-Age” Special.) “That this branch of the National Dairy Federation • protests against the unfairness in making dairy farmers take out a heavy traffic licence when their lorries are used for the purpose of conveying milk to a dairy factory only, and that your council endeavour to have this unfairness rectified,” was a resolution passed at a recent meeting of the Wairarapa branch of the National Dairy Federation, which was contained in a letter received at yesterday’s meeting of the Featherston County Council. “It was stated at the meeting of the Dairy Federation that if county councils waived their authority in the matter the Highway Board would not enforce it, and further that in other dis tricts dairy farmers were not required to take out heavy traffic licences. “You will readily perceive the unfairness of the position when you consider that the farmer pays rates for the maintenance of the roads and that a horse-drawn vehicle is allowed to carry any weight on such roads while a motor vehicle which is the only con veyance used by the modern farmer; carrying over a given weight has tc have a heavy traffic licence,” the letter stated. It was further stated that a deputation would wait on the council, but as it did not put in an appearance the matter was held in abeyance.
