HEAVY AGENDA

REMITS AT FARMERS’ UNION CONFERENCE. STABILISATION OF EWE PRICES. There are fifty-three remits on the igenda paper at the Inter-Provincial Conference of the Farmers Union, which opened today. The bulk of .he morning was devoted to consideration, of the guaranteed price question for meat and wool. After that matter had been disposed of discussion centred round the tallowing remit, moved by Mr R. W. Kebbell (Alfredton): ‘’That in view if the restriction upon the export of neat, this conference advocates a universal levy of the necessary fraction of Id per lb on all meat killed '.o be applied for the purpose of providing a stabilisation and compensation scheme.”

Mr L. T. Daniell (Masterton) explained in detail his stabilising and 'ompensating scheme in relation to the price of ewes. Mr Daniell spoke along the lines of addresses previously reported at recent Farmers’ Union meetings. Mr H. Bennett said the scheme was well worth trying. It would not mean any increase in taxation, would not nean Government control and it -ould be dropped if it did not prove successful.

Mr H. Morrison said they could not produce a five-year-old ewe at the ruling market rates. The scheme would raise the local or internal price ,f the ewe and would result in an economic price which would enable he producers to carry on. Mr R. O. Montgomerie said he was n sympathy with the scheme, which rad its merits. The weaknesses of he scheme were outweighed by the benefits that would result. The remit was carried unanimously.
