The Hon P. Fraser, Minister in Charge of Police, speaking at a gathering in Christchurch to farewell Superintendent Alan Cameron, mentioned the problem of providing better housing for the officers of the department. After referring to the poor conditions existing in Dunedin, the Minister said that when he went round the countryside and saw good, stout houses he was pleased; but when on his travels he saw a dilapidated shack which would be dignified by the term “house” he could not help wondering if it was a teacher’s or a policeman’s residence.
