SUPPLY OF LEMONS

GOVERNMENT TO CONTROL ALL MARKETING STANDARDISATION OF CURING METHODS. HOPES OF ALL-ROUND BENEFIT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. As a result of discussions between the Government and the New Zealand Citrus Council, as representatives of growers, the Government has now taken the responsibility of marketing all lemons, and has assured the growers a stabilised price, Mr F. R. Picot, Director of Internal Marketing, announced today. He said that by the means adopted, it should be possible to avoid alternate periods of over supply, with consequent low returns to producers, and corresponding harm done by the reverse position of very short supplies and high prices. Another reason for Government* supervision was a recognition of the need for standardising curing methods in order to see that only good quality fruit should reach the public, and this should have the very desirable effect of stimulating a permanent demand for New Zealand lemons.

Mr Picot also issues an assurance that, with a close watch on the matter of supplies and maximum prices, such difficulties as those experienced during the last few weeks will be immediately overcome. He remarked in connection with the influenza outbreak that no supply could have met the sudden demand, which could not be foreseen.
