NATIONAL REGISTER
AUSTRALIAN MINISTER’S APPEAL TRADE UNION HOSTILITY NOT UNDERSTOOD. NECESSITY OF COMPLYING WITH THE LAW. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. CANBERRA, May 23. The Minister of Defence, Mr Street, expressed the hope today that "sweet reason” would prevail when the Bill to provide a compulsory national register was passed by Parliament. He said he was unable to understand the trade union hostility because the proposed register was designed to keep trained men in industry and to keep square pegs out of round holes. The intention was not solely to secure recruits for the army. He was confident that the trade unions would observe the law and comply ‘with its requirements. The Prime Minister, Mr Menzies, said that the Commonwealth Government would take all the necessary steps to enforce the law for a compulsory register.
