FACTORY EMPLOYMENT

DEPENDENCY ON FARMING INDUSTRY. DEMAND FOR RAW MATERIALS. Out of a total of 96.401 factory employees in New Zealand (1936-37 figures), 24,611, or 25 per cent, were engaged in industries dependant solely on New Zealand raw materials supplied almost entirely by farming, the Provincial President, Mr Hugh Morrison, told yesterday’s meeting of the Farmers’ Union. Mr Morrison said there were 1055 factory establishments, employing 24,611 persons, dependent on primary industry in New Zealand for raw materials, while 1905 persons were engaged in 65 industries servicing the farming community only. There were 95 industries. employing 4,363 persons, which were partially dependent on New Zealand raw materials. Other primary industries, such as flax, rope and twine, totalled 45, employing 1058 workers.
