STATEMENT BY PREMIER APPEAL PROCEEDINGS POSSIBLE. VALIDATING LEGISLATION IF NECESSARY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. When asked last evening whether the decision of the Supreme Court holding the import regulations to be ultra vires would have the effect of permitting the importation of goods without licence, the Prime Minister, Mr Savage, replied that he hoped that importers in their own interest would not erroneously assume that to be the position. Mr Savage said that the text of the judgment had not yet come to hand; when it did it would be carefully considered by the law officers. If these so advised, the judgment would be tested in the Court of Appeal. If it so happened that the final decision supported that of the Supreme Court, the Government would forthwith introduce legislation giving effect to the policy which the regulations had been intended to carry out. and validating everything that had been done under them.

“It will be obvious, therefore,” said the Prime Minister, “that any attempt now made to import goods without licence can result only in disappointment and avoidable financial loss to those concerned.”
