DRUNKEN MOTORISTS
MAORI SENT TO GAOL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) TAIHAPE. May 22. Pleading guilt.v to a charge of being intoxicated in charge of a car, Pinekf Simon, a Maori. 46. Halcombe. appeared in the Taihape Magistrate's Court today. He was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment in Wanganui. The police stated that the accused’s car had collided with another car. The defendant had at least four bottles of beer in his car and had thrown them away after the accident. His licence was cancelled for two years. THREE WELLINGTON CASES. SENTENCES OF IMPRISONMENT. WEI/LINGTON, This Day. Three men were convicted by Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, Wellington, yesterday, for being intoxicated while in charge of motor-cars. A term of imprisonment was imposed in each case. Harry Hughes, watersider, aged 36. who pleaded not guilty to being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car in Taranaki Street last Saturday evening was sentenced to 14 days’ gaol with hard labour. His current driver’s licence was suspended and he was prohibited from obtaining another for two years. Donovan Donovan, salesman, aged 29, who admitted being found intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car in Willis Street on the morning of May 13, was sentenced to 10 days’ gaol with hard labour. His current licence was suspended and he was prohibited from obtaining another for a year. A similar penalty was imposed oh Alfred John Douglas, labourer, aged 30. who pleaded not guilty to a charge of being intoxicated while driving a mo-tor-truck on the Titahi-Porirua main, highway early on the morning of May 14.
