CHARADE IN GREAT FETTLE
(By '‘THE CYNIC.”)
Charade, by her pointless win in the Rangitira Hurdles at Manawatu on Friday, demonstrated that she is nr first-class fettle for her engagement in the Great Northern Hurdles, to be run at Ellerslie on June 5. It would have been surprising indeed had she not won yesterday, for in a moderate field, over the mile and three-quarters, she carried 10.6. while for the big event at Ellerslie of two and a-half miles, she is required to carry three pounds more. She should be further improved by her race and her supporters are confident that she will play an important part in the finish of the. Great Northern Hurdles. Phenomenal. Phenomenal was got by Robespierre from Sundance, by Sunny Lake — Showano, by St Ambrose —Savanna, by Stepniak—Sea Shell. He has the family speed, and may train on to win a more important event.
WAIKATO RACES
A DAY OF THRILLS. SENSATIONAL DIVIDENDS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND. May 22. Thrills galore were provided at the Waikato Racing Club’s winter meeting at Te Rapa today, and the climax was reached when Race Camp won the last event, paying over a century for a win and double figures for a place. The day opened sensationally when Ngawiri won the first race and paid over two-thirds of a century on the straightout machine and double figures for a place. All the other winners, with the exception 'of Midland, also returned double figures, Biform paying over a third of a century in the Waikato Steeplechase, and Maori Song over a quarter of a century in the Te Rapa Handicap.
Further sensations were added when Black Marlin fell and broke his neck in the Waikato Steeplechase and Valpeen dropped dead about 30 yards from the post. D. Craddock, rider ,of Black Marlin, received slight concussion, and H. Turner, rider of Valpeen, who was thrown against a guard rail, a scalp wound and a badly-bruised shoulder. The Te Rapa trainer, A. Winder, and his apprentice, F. Hain, completed a stable double with Maori Song and Prince Acre. The weather was fine and the course was in good order. The totalisator handled £32,678 10s, compared with £29,544 10s on the second day last year. The investments for .the meeting, were £83,559 10s, against £76,165 last year—an increase of £7394 10s. The veteran Paper Money gelding Silver Streak, reproduced something like his old brilliancy when finishing third in the Seadown Handicap at the South Canterbury meeting. Silver Streak appears to be quite sound, and is by no means a thing of the past. Pandine. Pandine carried the field along in the Craigmore Steeples at South Canterbury at a rare pace, and covered the two miles in a ‘‘tick’’ over 4min. a lime seldom approached. Pandine is bred on good linos, as he was got by Panmuie from Geraldine bv Nassau— The Spike, by Charlemagnell—Marlin by Artillery. A Long Spell. After three starts in Sydney Denis was gelded and fired. He was then sent to New Zealand. After a five rnontns holiday at Westmere he is back in Sydney and is again a member of G. Prices team. As Denis gave a deal of promise, and is only three years old. there is still a chance of his acting up to it.
FOXTON MEETING
In connection with the Foxton Racing Club’s winter meeting to be held at Awapuni Racecourse on Saturday, in the event of the acceptors in the Trial Stakes exceeding 24 the Club will run two Maiden Races and open the totalisator for each race, paying an additional, stake.
Early Retirement. . There is no fear of Ajax being raced until he falls from his present high estate, but that has been the fate of some first-class performers. Marvel and Bungebah were notable instances. Marvel, whose wins included a Doncaster with 10.4 and an Epsom with 10.2. and who also defeated Carbine at weight-fob-age, continued racing until he was eight years old. His last start was in a Warwick Farm Handicap, one mile and a quarter, in which, with 8.7. he ran nowhere. Marvel was a stallion, but Bungebah, who was also kept going until long past his best, was a gelding. At five, he won the Newmarket with 9.3, and raced until he was 10, finishing his career with an unplaced run with 9.0 in a Rosehill Flying Handicap. Bungebah ran in the 1892 Newmarket Handicap with 10.4. It would be possible to name horses of more recent years whose racing records wore besmirched by being kept a little too long on the stage.
