Mrs A. A. McDonnell has returned to Masterton from Paraparaumu Beach.

The Rev H. W. Austin, a master at Wanganui Collegiate School, has been appointed manager of the New Zealand badminton team to tour Australia in July and August. * Mr C. N. Cole, of Masterton, has found it necessary to enter the Lewisham Hospital, Wellington, as. the result of injuries to his back following on a motor accident some time ago. The Hon F. Jones, Postmaster-Gen-eral, left Dunedin by the through express on Saturday and arrived at Wellington yesterday morning. He will leave for Hamilton on Tuesday night to lay the foundation stone of the new post office there. ' The Rev W. G. M. Heerdegan, Auckland, has been appointed to the parochial district of Bombay, rendered vacant by the resignation of the Rev A. P. Parr. The chaplaincy of St Stephen’s College, a Maori educational institution under the control of the Church of England, is included in the duties to be taken by Mr Heerdegan.

■ The death occurred at Auckland .yesterday of Mrs Jenkin, mother of Mr J. Jenkin, of Masterton, at the age of 83 years. Mr Jenkin also suffered a bereavement on Saturday, word having been received that a .brother who is resident in England, had died that day. Much sympathy will be extended to Mr Jenkin and the other relatives in the double bereavement. The death occurred on Saturday morning of Mr William Connor, at the age of 60 years, reports a Press Association telegram from Dunedin. He was town clerk of West Harbour Borough since 1918. He was also a justice of the peace and a member of the executive of the Otago Justices of the Peace Association. Mr Connor .occupied a prominent position in the bowling world and was a past-president of the New Zealand Bowling Council. At today’s annual meeting of the Wairarapa Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union, tributes were paid to the great woyk of Mr R. Patterson, who recently resigned from the Kumaroa branch of the Union after having been chairman for a period of 37 years. It was decided to place on record appreciation of his services, and to forward him a letter thanking him for his work, and interest and wishing him many years of good health and happiness in his retirement. The discoverer of Nauru Island phosphates, Sir Albert Ellis, who was knighted last y.ear, is visiting Wanganui. He was born in Queensland, but was educated in New Zealand. It was while he was employed by the Pacific Islands Company, London, that Sir Albert Ellis discovered the rich phosphate deposits on Nauru and Ocean Islands. He subsequently became island manager for the Pacific Phosphate Company, and later local director. He has also been New Zealand commissioner on the board of the British Phosphate Commissioners since 1920. It was for his discovery and his later work that he was knighted.

At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Badminton Federation on Saturday afternoon the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: —Patron, . his Excellency the Governor-General, Lord Galway; president, Dr G. W. Gower; vice-presid-ents, Mr D. O. Whyte and Mr E. J. Pumphrey; hon secretary and treasurer, Mr R. B. Wheeley; hon auditor, Mr T. G. Hull; hon solicitor, Mr H. N. Burns; management committee, Messrs D. A. F. Crombie. H. N. Burns, E. J. Rishworth, E. C. Gorton, C. Levin (Wellington), E. R. Utting, D. S. James (Auckland), C. J. E. Smith (New Plymouth), G. Callis (Hamilton), H. M. A. Major (Mastertbn). Constable R. Smith, formerly of Masterton, was has been stationed in Paekakariki for the past eight years, and is being transferred on promotion to Motueka, was entertained at a farewell gathering organised by the Paekakariki Surf Club, and held in the club’s hall. Mr W. Campbell presided, and in addition to a large attendance of local residents, there were also present visitors representing Plimmerton, Horokiwi Valley, and Paraparaumu. Presentations of an afternoon tea set to Mrs Smith, a similar gift to the Misses Smith, and a fountain pen to Constable Smith, were made by members of the club. On behalf of the residents of the whole district, the M.P. for Otaki, Mr Lowry, presented Constable Smith with a chiming clock, Mrs Smith with a tea wagon, and the Misses Smith a handbag and toilet set.

The death occurred at his home, Gisborne, at the age of 91 years,- of Mr William Galloway Jerram. He arrived in New Zealand as a boy with his parents, the family coming out in the ship Spray of the Ocean, the trip taking 90 days. They settled in North Auckland, and later Mr Jerram went to Hawke’s Bay, where he took over the management of a sheep station that had been under the control of the late Mr John Coleman, Napier. In 1894 Mr Jerram became part owner with Mr W. A. Neale, of Waihi Station, later disposing of his interests to manage several properties for the Lowry family. In 1902 Mr Jerram removed to Poverty Bay, taking over the management of Waikohu Station for Mr J. Holdsworth. During the war he controlled Mr E. M. Hutchinson's Ruatiquri stations. He had lived in retirement in Gisborne since 1925.
