MASTERTON SAVAGE CLUB
SATURDAY’S KORERO. A MOST ENJOYABLE GATHERING. A spirit of carefree enjoyment was again evident on Saturday night when the Hamua Tribe held the second of this season’s fortnightly Koreros in the Savage Club rooms before a very good attendance of members and several visitors. Wellington, New Plymouth, Gisborne, Timaru, Adelaide were represented as well as several local visitors. After the traditional opening and initiation of the Chief of the evening (Dep-Chief V. Wilton), a programme of music and mirth was commenced. Paleface Clefcient sang very nicely. The surprise of the evening was a bracket of vocal solos by Past Chief W. Iggulden. Though in his 80th year his voice has lost none of its strength and his rendering of “Glorious Devon” will long be remembered by all who were privileged to hear it. A thumbnail sketch by members of the Dramatic Club, Savages F. Henry and R. Cottle, entitled "Anticipation” was followed by a vocal solo by Paleface R. Gilbert. Savages N. Fleming and F. Coleman were associated in the next sketch “Pessimism.” For some twenty minutes Paleface I. I. McGregor discoursed on his recent tour abroad which included Holland, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland and Great Britain, the whole being done in a motor coach with a commentator accompanying. Following the introduction of the visitors by the Deputy Chief an adjournment was made to the supper room.
At an appropriate interval Past Chief J. A. Kennedy welcomed the visitors and expressed the hope that they would thoroughly enjoy the entertainment and hospitality provided by the Hamua tribe.
Palefaces J. Watson and H. B. Timmings replied on behalf of the visitors.
The second half of the programme commenced with two part songs by the newly formed Glee Club led by Savage J. B. McPherson, followed by another song by Paleface Clement. Savages J. A. Marshall and G. C. Gaze were next associated in a thumb - nail sketch entitled-“ The New Position.” Savage Palamontain provided a few minutes amusement with a paper soliloqy. Paleface R. G. Gilbert again favoured those present with a solo and for the final sketch Savages A. P. Hancock and K. Power, assisted by other members of the Dramatic Club, successfully played a most humorous sketch entitled “Slow.”
Following the closing ode all members adjourned to the supper room where songs and music were enjoyed for some time to the accompaniment of Chief Scribe T. E. Handcock.
