GRAIN AND PRODUCE
CANTERBURY MARKETS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 19. There is still very little life in the Canterbury grain, seeds and produce markets. Potatoes are, if anything, again easier. There are plenty offering, but the demand from the North Island is still very small. The quotation to farmers is round £6 a ton. There has been some trouble at Lyttelton recently over the size of the potatoes being sent to the port. Farmers appear to be under the impression that as there is a larger percentage of small this year, the grade would be affected, but the grade is a permanent one and farmers including too many smalls will have their potatoes rejected at Lyttelton. Oats and chaff are quiet at unchanged prices. There is very little activity in small seeds. Montgomery red clover, of which there has been a particularly good crop in South Canterbury this year, is still coming on the market, and merchants are paying round Is 9d for certified machine-dres-sed.
