HARRIER ACTIVITIES
MASTERTON CLUB EVENTS GOOD FORM SHOWN ON SATURDAY. SEALED HANDICAP TO LONG. A five miles sealed handicap race was the Masterton Harrier Club’s programme on Saturday afternoon. A' large muster of members left the Park Oval to follow a trail laid by Messrs J. J. Hunter and R. Bell. The trail followed the Waipoua new suspension bridge’s stop bank, and along to the Colombo road bridge, from whence the trail went Twer tussock and swamp land over paddocks, and down the Te Ore Ore road, this being covered twice. W. A. C. Pullar ran a great race over the two laps to win comfortably from G. Gregory in 29mins 42sec, with C. Wright close behind. The sealed handicap was won by C. K. Long, with A. Andrew second. Long, who is a consistent runner, was warmly congratulated on his success. Andrew thoroughly deserved his place, as he kept well up with the experienced men all the way. Pullar filled third place in this event, being. 30secs behind scratch. H. Carle ran well to finish fourth in the sealed handicap. The juniors went over the same course, but only one lap. P. Greenlees ran a splendid race to dead heat with P. Reynolds for first place in 22 minutes. D. Cairns filled third position. Lack of training caused several harriers to pull out after the first lap, having been attacked by the dreaded “stitch.” After the race a presentation was made on behalf of the club members by Mr R. Gully to Mr C. Wright, who is relinquishing the position of secretary as he is leaving the district, being on transfer. Mr Wright suitably replied. At a subsequent meeting of the club members. Mr Colin Ross was appointed to fill a vacancy on the committee, andsMr A. Andrew was elected secretary.
KIATERE HARRIERS SEALED HANDICAP RUN. ENCOURAGING FORM DISPLAYED. A sealed handicap run over a course of approximately 5“ miles for the seniors, with cine lap for the juniors was conducted at the Solway showgrounds by the Kiatere Harrier Club on Saturday. Both events were keenly contested, and the form was most encouraging. N. Jacobsen was the winner of the junior event, he also gained fastest time. F. Sexton won the sealed handicap. J. Laing crossed the line first in the senior event, and also gained the fasti) t time. A. Addison won the sealed handicap. The juniors were sent away first. From the start C. Stewart, followed by C. Summers, made a very fast pace. However, H. Jacobson, with M. Doyle in close attendance moved up and captured the lead. With about a mile to go H. Jacobson running with effortless ease left M. Doyle to win by a comfortable margin. The placings and times were: —H. Jacobson, 18.23, 1; M. Doyle, 18.43, 2; C. Summers and F. Sexton, 19.10. 4th equal; S. Pickett, 21.45, 5;. J. Hodgetts, 21.46, 6; N. Dickel, 21.37, 7. The sealed handicap was won by F. Sexton, with S. Pickett and J. Hodgetts, second and third. The seniors were started by Mr D. Turnbull, and L. McDonald closely followed by J. Laing, and J. L. Burns, were the pacemakers. By the time the Solway School was reached the field had strung out to find W. Burns leading L. Laing and W. McDonald, followed by B. Falloon, W. Burgess and L. Francis. The placings remained until half-way around the second time, when J. Laing running superbly captured the lead from W. Burns, At this stage, W. Burgess began to move up into third place, closely followed by W. McDonald, B. Falloon, with L. Francis following. These placings were held until the- finish. The placings and fastest times were: —J. Laing, 34.12, 1; W. Burns, 34,20, 2; W. Burgess, 35min, 3;W. McDonald, 35.35, 4; B. Falloon, 35.42, 5; L. Francis, 37.38, 6; A. Addison, 37.52, 7. Sealed handicap honours were won by A. Addison, with J. Laing second and B. Falloon third.
Next Saturday’s eVent will be a five mile race under open handicap conditions. The juniors will have a one lap course of 24 miles, and also an open handicap.
