COMEDY COOK MAY BE USEFUL

(By

THE CYNIC.”)

Comedj' Cook, a four-year-old mare by Mimetic from Galley Cook, finished very well on both days at Gisborne, and is likely to be useful. She is of the same family as the Auckland Cup winner Lottie, one of the very best mares produced in the first quartercentury of New Zealand’s turf history. Galley Cook never raced, and Kitchenette, a half sister to Comedy Cook, was of little account. Promising Effort. Trumpeter Sound, one of the best looking colts seen at Riccarton for a long time, was produced in the Trial Stakes and his effort was most encouraging as it was his first start and he finished sixth when considered too backward to run prominently. The best part of his performance was his finishing run. Trumpeter Sound, a half-brother to Concertpitch and Irish Fiddle, is by Night Raid and he is not expected to show form until a three-year-old. Another in the field who ran well in the circumstances was Jumeaux Ravine, a Winning Hit filly from Brave Deed. She shot through into prominence at ine false rail after being a fair way back and was in fifth place at the post. Promising Youngsters. It is a long time since Mr J. M. Samson’s colours have been seen carried to success on the Riccarton course, but Pink Dress gave them a well-earned success at the Ashburton meeting, when that two-year-old led nearly all the way in the Trial Stakes, of five furlongs. / This filly is by Pink Coat from Gold Dress, a full-sister to the good hurdler Aladdin, who was by Hunting Song from the Polydamon mare, Etoile d’Or, and she was bred by her owner and is trained by F. A. Roberts. Pink Dress is a filly of great brilliance and she may develop into a good class sprinter next year. Stylist, who has had one race previous to her effort .on Saturday, showed unexpectedly good form to finish second to Pink Dress and there was some encouragement in her effort. She is a two-year-old by Nightmarch from Pride, winner of the New Zealand Oaks, by Sutala from Egotism, dam of a good handicap performer, Jaloux. Blue Coat, who was badly away, and who subsequently was placed fourth after having been in third place a furlong from home, is by Pink Coat from Miss Muffitt.

H. Morton’s Team at Winton. The jumpers ha Boca and Tautau Maid, are working well at Winton. The latter has benefited from swimming exercise during the past few weeks at Riverton, and appears to be quite -sound'.’•‘■Lqchie'River, also in H. Morton’s stable, has made a good recovery from the lameness he developed just before the Riverton meeting, and should be well suited by the softer tracks during the winter meetings. Panara. Young Squatter and Henry Dawson are also members of Morton’s team. Well-Merited Success. His excellent third at Otaki brought Lord Cavendish into favour for the Rongotea Handicap, the open sprint at Awapuni on Friday, and the Beau Pere gelding won really well after appearing to be in a rather awkward position as they straightened up. A newcomer to T. R. George’s stable at Trentham, he has brought an early return, and still better things should lie ahead. He is most attractively bred, being by the successful sire Beau Pere from Lady Cavendish, a fine sprinter, who included the Auckland Railway Handicap among her- successes, and he is thus a half-brother to the V.K.C. Oaks winner Golden Hair. Allunga for Stud. Allunga has run his last race, and will return to ivir E. Hunter Bowman’s property at Muswellbrook, where he will commence a stud career next season, states an Australian writer. Mr Hunter Bowman already owns the imported sire Achcullen, but Allunga will be given the opportunities that his outstanding race performances have warranted. Without ever rising to champion heights, he proved himself one of the gamest and hardiest stayers of recent years. He had more racing than most horses, but he had never looked better than during the recently-conclud-ed Australian Jockey Club Meeting, and he future should be unimpared.

MANAWATU MEETING

STEEPLES TO LORD HEREFORD. GALTEEMORE SUCCESSFUL IN HANDICAP. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N„ May 21. The Manwatu Racing Club’s winter meeting concluded at Awapuni on Saturday in fine but overcast and threatening weather. However, except for a few light, misty showers, the day was fine. Fields were small in the jumping events, but racing was keen, and was enjoyed by a large crowd. Light rain during the night had slightly softened ihe lop of the going, and times were slower than on the previous day. The Awapuni Steeplechase drew only three runners, and the Raukawa Hurdles was confined to two. On the flat the principal winners were Galtecmorc and Lord Cavendish, Lord Cavendish being the only horse to win a double at the meeting. T. George's stable thus won the day's fiat double. The totalisator handled £19,089 10s. There was no second day last year, and the total for the two days was £33,231. At the instigation of the stipendiary steward, Mr 13. N. Sandilands, the judicial committee sat to consider alleged interference by W. J. Broughton on Lord Cavendish, with Diamond Cutter, ridden by H. Stewart, in the finish of the Mcßae Handicap.
