WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION COMPETITIONS A & B GRADE MATCHES. COMMENT ON THE PLAYERS. The Wairarapa Basketball Associa- ; lion's games were continued on the Wairarapa College courts on Saturday with the following results:— A Grade. lona beat Collegians, 25/5. Stars beat H.5.0.G., 24/7. B Grade. lona won from Technical Old Girls by default. Carterton beat Stars, 31/17. lona beat Greytown Hospital. 24/6. Belvedere beat College D, 23/2. Hospital beat Greytown, 19/14. As the scores indicate the two A grade matches were very uneven. The lona v Collegians match was scrappy and unsatisfactory. Collegians can, however, be commended for improved form. The forwards worked well and
B. Linton’s play showed very promising improvement, but the shooting was inaccurate. For lona R. Percy shot most of the goals. She will be an excellent player when, her speed in field play improves*. At present she lacks that springy swiftness which is essential to a really successful forward. B. Stitt was transferred to the forward third where she played very satisfactorily. There was again far too much personal contact in this game. High School Old Girls were not up to form on Saturday; also they probably missed J. Russell who, unfortunately for the team, has accepted a position in Hawke’s Bay. Stars’ passing was often very good and their combination much better than that of their, opponents. However Stars centres seem to lack a consistent plan of play. They do not intercept well and use far too long passes. The defenders were very good, M. Gadsby being again outstand--ing at interceptions. R. Hawke is promising, but is advised to pass more quickly and also to beware of moving, with the ball. E. Jones and O. Lysaght were responsible for some very bright spots in the game. The B grade match, lona v Greytown Hospital, caused a good deal of interest. The nurses’ team is a very promising one, the girls being strong, quick and very active. They were at a great disadvantage in having to face such a strong team as lona for their first match. When they have attained some sureness in combination the new team should do very well indeed. For Iona; T. Williams, in the centre plays a good game and all three forwards did very well. > The Belvedere and Carterton teams did excellently. Both these teams possess forwards who can and- do throw goals. It is interesting to note a great improvement in the uniforms ot the various teams. On Saturday for the first time Carterton wore their new maroon and whfte dresses and received many compliments on their neat appearance. The Grey town nurses wore a bright blue tunic, with white blouse and red tie, a very workmanlike uniform. A new uniform this year is Belvedere’s tunic, with white blouses. All the teams are to be congratulated on their attention to the important matter of suitable dressing for the game.
