The Chinese, counter-attacking in North Hupeh, have slaughtered 18,000 Japanese, thus defeating the encircling movement at Tangho, where-two Japanese columns effected a junction earlier and became isolated from the main body, owing to fopced marches. The Japanese are retreating southwards through the Tahung Mountains towards Tsaoyang, conducting a run - ning flight with their pursuers. *. JAPANESE CLAIM HUPEH & HONAN AREAS CLEARED. (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) TOKIO, May 19. The Japanese claim that they have cleared Northern Hupeh and Southern Honan of Chinese troops.
