SHIPPING RESERVE

POWERS FOR BRITISH BOARD OF TRADE. CARGO AND PASSENGER SHIPS. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, May 18. The President of the Board of Trade, Mr Oliver Stanley, stated in the House of Commons today that the passing of the estimate of £2,100,000 to meet the cost of the reserve of merchant ships which the Government intends to acquire would enable the Board of Trade to buy ’ ships which were to be replaced by new ones if desired. That would have to be confirmed by legislation. The Bill would place a legal obligation on shipowners to offer their ships to the Board of Trade before they could be sold either abroad or at home. Though it was intended to purchase cargo ships, there would be power in the Bill to buy passenger ships also.
