MASTERTON’S ANNIVERSARY

85 YEARS SINCE FIRST SETTLERS ARRIVED. Next Wednesday will mark the 85th anniversary of the arrival of the first settlers at Worksop Farm, Masterton. It was on May 24, 1854, that the ori* ginal band of pioneers reached these parts. As far as Mr Charles Bannister can ascertain, only four of the early settlers who either walked or were carried over the Rimutakas survive. They are Mrs Cox (nee Miss S. lorns). of New Plymouth; Mrs C. Wilton (nee Miss M. Matthews), of Opaki; Mrs McDonald (nee Miss McKenzie), of Martinborough, and Mr Roger Renall, of Master ton.
