TURF NEWS & NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE & COURSE Views on Racing Facts and Fancies BOLDSTEP A USEFUL SORT

(By “3

"THE CYNIC.")

In 23 starts Boldstep has had six /T' wins, four seconds and three thirds for £B3O in stakes, and his contribution brings the winning of the progeny of Warstep to more than £ll,000. Comedy Cook. ■ Comedy Cook, a four-year-old mare by Mimetic from Galley Cook, finished very well on both days at Gisborne and is likely to be useful. She is of the same family as the Auckland Cup winner Lottie, one of the very best mares produced in the first quartercentury of New Zealand’s turf history. Galley Cook never raced, and Kitchenette, a half-sister to Comedy Cook, was of little account. Schooling. Ridden by J. F. Fergus, Knight of Australia was schooled over four pony hurdles at Ellerslie on Thursday morning. He jumped the first two carefully, but cleared the remainder in fine style. He is no newcomer to the business, having previously done a fair amount of schooling in private. Knight of Australia is to make his debut in the minor hurdle events at the Great Northern Meeting. Hurdle Recruit. When Trentham trainer A. Goodman returned from Blenheim, he brought back with him the four-year-old gelding Far East, who will be tried as a jumper. Far East, who has done practically all his racing on the NelsonMarlborough circuit, is an upstanding gelding by Hoturoa, a Panmure horse, purchased by the late A. Rore, and unraced. Hoturoa’s half-brother, Dionysius, appeared to have a brilliant career ahead as a jumper, when trained by F. D. Jones, but he met an untimely end. Improving. Dropped Catch is improving as a hurdler and he gave a much better exhibition in his latest bout over the battens. After a little schooling he vzill be put over the big fences, and he will be raced over country during the winter if all goes well. Naming Juveniles. The finding of a name for juveniles must give owners a good deal of mental exercise on occasion, but one is apt to wonder how certain of the selected names are arrived at. In a recent issue of the Racing Calendar figures the cognomen of Ballylarkin, which has been accorded a filly by Defoe from Imperial Rose. Racegoers will have to De pardoned if they call her a “bally larrikin” in the excitement of a race. An Enviable Record. When G. Price led in Spear Chief as winner of the Brisbane Cup recently, he completed a record that is unique in Australian racing. He has trained the winners of the Melbourne, Sydney -and Brisbane Cups. Price wbn the Sydney Cup in 1926 with Murray King, starting at 200 to one, the long-est-priced winner of that event in its history. In 1925 he won the Melbourne Cup with Windbag, and now, 14 years later, he has won the Brisbane Cup. Leading Three-year-old. Defaulter has been outstanding in a year that has otherwise been strong in three-year-olds, and his performances on both sides of the Tasman have caused him to earn recognition as one of the greatest colts to be bred in New Zealand. Defaulter’s three wins in Australia were worth £2575, bringing his total for the season up to £6930 and a gold cup valued at £l5O. Following is a list of the chief three-year-old winners and their records in the current season:—

Ponty js included in the growing list of novice jumpers at Riccartdn. He received his initial education at his trainer’s establishment at Yaldhurst, and had paid two visits to Riccarton and given some schooling over the pony hurdes. He has been ridden to date by M. Reilly, and has shown an aptitude for the game.

MANAWAW MEETING A DAY FOR FAVOURITES. STEEPLES TO JOHN CHARLES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N„ May 19. A feature of the racing on the opening day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s winter meeting at Awapuni today was the success of the favourites. They won six of the eight races on the card. The principal flat events, the Manawatu Winter Cup and the Rongotea Handicap, were won respectively by Old Surrey and Lord Cavendish, both of which were ridden by Wiggins. The two main jumping races, the Manawatu Steeplechase and the Rangitira Hurdles, were both won by the stable of H. E. Greene, with John Charles and Charade, both being ridden by A. Jenkins. Another’ stable to win a double was that of Mrs McDonald, who scored with Brazil, in addition to Old Surrey. This makes the third double in. successive meetings for Mrs McDonald.

The weather was dull and overcast and later threatening, but it was mild and pleasant for winter racing. The track was in first-class order and very fast for this period of the year.
