WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a very large attendance of members and visitors at the fourth birthday meeting of the local Women’s Institute which was held in the Memorial Hall on Thursday. The president (Mrs Spicer) presided. Miss Hanlon welcomed the visitors. The proceedings opened with the singing of the Institute’s -song “Comrades and Friends.” Several items were given by Maori members which were greatly appreciated. Mrs Clarke (Wellington) was recalled several times for her vocal items. Mrs R. McClelland gave a delightful whistling solo. A competition, “Know Your Stars,” was won by Miss L. Mundy. Mrs A. Gallon, president of the Matarawa Institute, also addressed the gathering. The birthday cake, which was artistically decorated, was made by Mrs D. J. Mclntosh. The proceedings terminated with the singing of the National Anthem. EUCHRE PARTY AND DANCE. KAHUTARA QUEEN FUNCTION. A successful euchre party and dance was held in the hall on Wednesday evening, the proceeds of which were in aid of the carnival fund of the Kahutara queen (Miss Corlett). The first prize in the euchre was won by Mrs C. Hodder, Mrs Cowan being second. The consolation was won by Mrs Sutton. Mr Ruka was the winner of the men’s section with Mr J. Riwai second. Mr V. Hume won the consolation prize. The competition for a pig, donated by Mr S. Mclntosh, was won by Mr Alf. Wilton, Martinborough. The dance music was supplied by local talent. Personal Items. Mrs Biggar, of Pahiatua, is the guest of her daughter, Mrs Priest. It is understood that Mr and Mrs Crosbie will shortly leave the district. Mi’ Crosbie has been manager of the Lower Valley Dairy Company, and Mrs Crosbie is a popular and valued member of the local Women’s Institute. She was secretary for a term, and her departure will be a distinct loss to the organisation. His many friends will regret to learn that Mrs W. Boyens. who has been in indifferent health for some time, has been compelled to enter hospital for treatment. Mr and Mrs C. Todd, Masterton, are staying at their Ferry home for a few weeks. Mrs Latham, formerly a resident of this district, was present at the birthday meeting of. the local Women’s Institute. She was the guest of Mrs Spicer. Mrs Swan, Wanganui, is staying with her daughter, Mrs Trevor Hume. Mr R. McDougall and his daughters are on a motor tour of the northern districts.
