“ALCATRAZ ISLAND.” The American penitentiary. “Big Rock.” situated in the chill waters of San Francisco Bay, is brought to the motion picture screen for the first time in “Alcatraz Island.” a thrilling melodrama which will be piesen'ed at the Cosy Theatre tonight. Grim but fascinating is this story of i men who live outside the law, and of the men whose duty it is to apprehend and convict them. Every moment is loaded with thrills as this drama moves swiftly to an unexpected and exciting climax. John Litel is featured as a racketeer who is, despite his business, rather likeable. Income tax evasion catches up with Litel. He is sent first to Leavenworth prison. There, in a fight with a lesser gangster, which is forced upon him, he is pronounced incorrigible, and transferred to Alcatraz. An amazingly dramatic sequence of events, occurring behind the walls of Alcatraz while the trial is going on, bring out the truth concerning the murder, and real justice has its way. The other feature is “Freshman 1 Year,” featuring Dixie Dunbar, Wil- , liam Lundigan, Constance 'Moore and Ernest Truex. It is a realistic comedy ' drama of college life with music. As the title indicates, the picture deals ' with the exploits of a group of fresh- ’ men experiencing their first year of ■ college life. In setting, action and dia- ■ logue it has all of the gaiety, sparkle ! and modernity, as well as the worries ■ and pressing problems, of present-day ■ college youth. The lighter side of the -■ quest for a higher education is preL sented with delightful wit.
