JAPANESE POLICY
CHANGE IN ANTLCOMINTERN PACT DIRECTED ONLY AGAINST SOVIET. NO MILITARY ALLIANCE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 12.5 p.m.) LONDON, May 18. “The Times” Tokio correspondent says skilful draughtmanship has evolved a satisfactory formula for strengthening the Anti-Comintern Agreement, which the Japanese Government is prepared to effect in preference to the proposed military alliance. It is learned that the new agreement contains neither military, economic nor political pledges, but definitely strengthens the Anti -Comintern Pact and sharpens its point against the Soviet. Japan is not pledged to enter into any quarrel, unless her own paramount interests in East Asia are affected. The new pact, however, aligns Japan a shade more definitely with one of the two great camps into which the world is being divided. • •
DEFENCE OF SHANGHAI
AUTHORITIES MARSHALLING FORCES. ANTICIPATION OF JAPANESE EFFORT. ■ (Received This Day, 1.5 p.m.) > LONDON, May 18. The “Daily Telegraph’s’’ Shanghai correspondent says that, in anticipation of a large scale Japanese effort to dominate the Interriational Settlement at Shanghai, similar to the action taken at Kulangsu, the authorities are mobilising police, marshalling foreign garrisons and instituting patrols. The authorities may also re-establish the curfew.
