AGAINST SPIES
HEAVY APPROPRIATION IN U.S.A. PROVISION FOR EXTENDED ACTION. AN IMPRESSIVE REPORT. By Telegraph-Press Association— Copyright. (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) WASHINGTON, May 18. ■ The House of Representatives Appropriations Committee, acting after Mr J. Edgar Hoover had reported that the activities of spies were increasing alarmingly, approved a 300,000 dollars fund, to finance a counter-espionage drive by G-men. The amount is a record. Mr Hoover’s testimony, filed with the Bill, showed that, although spy cases averaged only thirty-five annually for the five years preceding 1938, 634 cases were investigated last year, and Mr Hoover anticipated that there would be nearly 800 for 1939. Mr Hoover said the Army and the Navy had asked the G-men to establish counter-espionage offices at Puerto Rico. Hawaii, in the Panama Canal Zone and at the Philippines. The fund mentioned was intended for use against spies, kidnappers and extortionists.
