STREET DISORDERS
TROOPS GUARD BARRICADES. SEPARATING ARABS & JEWS. (Received This Day, 9.5 a.m.) JERUSALEM, May 18. Tension, continues to be most acute throughout Palestine. British troops, with fixed bayonets, are guarding barricades separating the Arab and Jewish quarters. In Jerusalem, Haifa, Jaffa and Tel Aviv, a total of 450,000 Jews participated in today’s demonstrations, after which irresponsible persons assembled at the District Commissioner’s offices. Squads of police, in full riot kit, with steel helmets and carrying shields, were rushed up. The demonstrators stoned the police and the bu-ildings and 300 persons were injured in the ensuing scuffle. Special guards were appointed to the Government buildings. Two Britishers and thirty-five Jews were injured in a police clash in the evening. All men and women, aged from 18 to 35 years, have been asked voluntarily to register and to place themselves at the disposal of the Jewish authorities for any duties, in order to defeat the new policy. 1 Twelve persons were injured in rioting after the bombing incident in Tel Aviv.
REPORTS CONFIRMED. MOTION IN PARLIAMENT ON MONDAY. (Received This Day, 9.5 a.m.) LONDON, May 18. The Secretary of State for the Colonies, Mr Malcolm MacDonald, in the House of Commons, confirmed the reports of Jewish disturbances in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. The Prime Minister, Mr Neville Chamberlain, announced that a motion approving the Palestine policy would be introduced in the House of Commons on Monday.
