ROAD CYCLING
WAIRARAPA CLUB. NOTES ON SATURDAY'S RACE. (By “Three Speed.”) The race held by the Wairarapa Cycling Club was- to the Black Bridge and return —a distance of 25 miles. Ten riders faced the starter and Were soon on their way riding into a heavy southerly wind which made the outward journey very tiring but once round the turn the riders set a fast pace for home. E. Lefort rode an. excellent race to secure first place. He has always been a trier and deserves his win. With a little more training he should do even better. O. Morris, who comes from Carterton every Saturday, gained second place after a fine effort. Probably he would do better if he lowered the saddle on his machine. K. Gilbert is settling down, but could do with more training. However he is a trier and is doing fine. P. Mayes was a starter on Saturday but found the going a little too strenuous for him, but he completed the journey. With more training he will do better. M. Graham lost his co-marker just after the start of the race, and found that pushing against a head wind on his own was hard work. We should hear more of this plucky rider. C. Gourlay was on the starting line again, but found that hard training is necessary for such a race. When ho is in top form he will probably prove a “surprise packet.” G. Goodin had the misfortune to crash just before the turn but remounted and set out after the scratch men. He caught them to be in the sprint and gain third fastest time. It was a good performance. J. Brader started on Saturday, riding a good race after a bout of influenza. He was there at the finish and gained second fastest time. J. McAliece found the going too hard and could do with more training. R. Copp was again without his comarker, K. Woollett, who underwent a dental operation, but he nevertheless battled on to gain third place and the fastest time. Being in at the sprint seems to be a habit with him. The riders are urged to get in some hard training as the Palmerston-Bulls 'race is drawing near.
