LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

* PROGRAMME PRESENTED BY CHILDREN. ADDRESS BY MRS A. L. BENNETT. There was a very large attendance at the meeting of the Masterton League of Mothers, which was held in the Parish Hall yesterday afternoon. The President (Mrs L. B. Maunsell) occupied the chair. Several new members were welcomed. A special feature of the afternoon was a programme given entirely by children. Those taking part were: —C. Maunsell and H. Robertson, piano solos; J. Russell, D. Maunsell, E. Corskie, songs; N. Blackwood, M. Bennett, M. Heath and E. Thomas, recitations; J. Heath, musical monologue and N. Blackwood, dance solo. All these items were much enjoyed and the young performers were heartily thanked. Mrs E. J. Coleman played the accompaniments. The speaker of the day, Mrs A. L. Bennett, took as her subject the romance of lace making. Having touched on the early days when lace was all hand-made, she went on to speak of the troubles that arose when spinning and other machines were introduced. Many of the machines were smashed by' angry workers, but at length, it was realised that the machines had come to stay.

On concluding, Mrs Bennett received a hearty vote of thanks. The tea hostesses were Mesdames J. Blackwood, A. L. Bennett, L. Hunter, F. A. Judd, W. A. Michael and E. G. Norman.
