RETURNED SOLDIERS BRANCH. MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Carterton branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association there were present Messrs A. T. Murray (chairman), L. J. Harding, C. Chennells, H. Rathbone, S. James, C. Mawley, F. Taplin, and the secretary. Apologies for absence were received from C. C. Callender and G. Rabbits. Before commencing business' the chairman briefly welcomed old and new members of the committee. Accounts amounting to £lO 10s Gd were passed for payment. The secretary said that the sale of poppies numbered 1,209 and brought in the sum of £6O 9s, a record for the district. In acknowledging a cheque for this amount the Wairarapa secretary (Mr A. E. Prentice) conveyed to the branch the congratulations of the Central Committee for the magnificent response made by the Carterton people to the appeal. For services rendered on Poppy Day and Anzac Day, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Women’s Institute, Pipe Band and the Carterton Municipal Band. I On the motion of Mr Rathbone, seconded by Mr Harding, Mr C. A. Chennells was unanimously elected vicechairman of the branch, and also delegate to the Central Committee. In connection with the military bah to be held in Masterton on June 21 it was decided that any member desiring an invitation to this function should hand in his name to the secretary not later than May 25. As some members were in arrears with their subscriptions it was left to the discretion of the secretary to try and collect the same.
An application for financial assistance from a member was granted, subject to the approval of the trustees. A letter was received from the Rev W. F. Stent in connection with the erecting in St Mark’s Church a memorial to the late Canon Feilden Taylor, and after discussion it was decided that contributions from members would be gratefully received. The secretary was instructed to open a subscription list for this purpose. It was decided to hold a church parade of the branch at St Mark’s Church on Sunday, November 13, when the memorial would be unveiled. The secretary was instructed to write to the Borough Council asking permission to erect a flagpole (recently -presented' to- 'the i branch) in Memorial Square. '■> It was unanimously decided to hold the annual plain and fancy dress ball on Monday, June 6, in the King’s Theatre. Final arrangements for this function will be discussed at the meeting with the ladies in the Fire BrigadeHall at 7.30 p.m. on June 12. It was decided to engage Udy’s Orchestra for the ball and also the Pi]ae Band, and to hire coloured lights from the Wairarapa Power Board. It was resolved that committee meetings be held on the third Tuesday in each month at 7.30 p.m. Consideration of a social evening for the members was held over until the next meeting. GOLF. MINIATURE RIFLES. MASTERTON BEAT CARTERTON. The first match of the inter-club series fired under the jurisdiction of the Wairarapa Miniature Rifle Association. fired on the Masterton range last evening and resulted in a win for Masterion by 20 points. There was a large attendance at the weekly card party in aid of the Boy Scout movement in Carterton, in St Mary’s Hall. The prize winners were: Ladies, Mrs Edwards 1, Mrs C. Meyrick 2. Men, Mr Morris 1, Mrs J. Martin (acting) 2. Supper was afterwards handed round and much appreciated. A Heavy Frost. There was a very heavy frost in Carterton this morning, the countryside being covered in a white mantle. Personal. /'! Mr and Mrs George Thomson, of Clareville, will shortly leave for Whakatane. They have resided in the Carterton district for many years. Mr Thomson was manager of the Taratahi cheese factory prior to it ceasing operations. Mr W. Williams, his son, and N. F. Teal, who spent a shooting holiday in the Whakatane district, returned home on Tuesday night. They report having had a pleasant time with splendid weather during their holiday. They managed to get a fairly g'ood bag of pheasants, ducks and other game. Farewell Social. A very pleasant social evening was tendered to Mr and Mrs Eric Rayner and Mr and Mrs Ron Allen, of Carrington and West Taratahi respectively, by the residents of the districts named in the, Clareville Hall last evening. There were many friends of the de-j parting guests present and the evening was spent in dancing to music supplied by Messrs Blake, of West Taratahi, and Jackson, of Masterton. Mr and Mrs Allen are leaving the district to reside in Greytown, and Mr and Mrs Rayner are going to live nearer Carterton. Both families have been residents of the district for many years. z At an appropriate interval in, the proceedings Mr W. R. Daysh said how sorry they all were to lose their old friends. They were not going far away but still their presence would be missed. He had no doubt but that they would visit their old districts occas : ionally. On behalf of the residents he had pleasure in handing Mr and Mrs Rayner an electric heater and toaster, and Mr and Mrs Ron Allen a beautiful clock. Both recipients suitably thanked the residents for their kindness. > The ladies of the. district in their usual lavish way provided and presided’ over a very enjoyable supper. The singing of “Auld ’Lang Syne” brought a very pleasant evening to a close. Hockey Teams. . Dalefield A will play Wesley at Carterton on Saturday and will be represented as under: G. Tildersley, E. Society’s Meeting. The annual meeting of members of the Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Society is to be held at the Society’s office, Memorial Square, Carterton. on Saturday, commencing at 10.30 a.m., when it is anticipated that a large number of members will attend. Nimodt. who was charged with having been found on licensed premises during the currency of a prohibition order, was fined £2. with costs 10s. Jas. B. McKenzie Hulme was charged by the police with having driven a car at an excessive speed and without due care and I attention. This case arose out of an 'accident that happened on the Tara-
tahi main highway recently when two cars came into collision, both being more or less damaged, one to the extent of losing a front wheel. After considerable evidence had been heard Mr Lawry dismissed the case. J. L. Milne, the rider of a motor cycle, was charged with having failed to stop and give way to an approaching car at the intersection of the Main Highway and Waihakeke Road. He pleaded guilty and was fined 30s with costs 10s. Traffic Inspector Nicholson proceeded against Raymond Benge for having exceeded the speed limit through the borough of Carterton on April 9. Defendant was .fined £3 and costs. Traffic Inspector' Nicholson proceeded against Clarence Foster for having ridden a cycle after dark without a light and for not having a red reflector attached to his cycle. He was fined 10s and 10s costs on each charge. Traffic Inspector Davis charged J. C. Bennett with having ridden a motor cycle when not being the holder of a motor driver’s licence. He was fined £l, costs 10s. Albert Hawker Eddy v Jas G. Murray: This was a case in which defendant was charged with having given misleading information under the Employment Promotion Act, 1936, three charges of obtaining £2 8s under false pretences. He was fined £5 and costs 30s.
