MAGISTRATE’S COURT
FORTNIGHTLY MASTERTON SITTING. POLICE AND BY-LAW CASES. I Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided at the fortnightly meeting of the Masterton Magistrate's Court held today. For riding a bicycle without a light Douglas Hooper was fined 10s and 12s costs. F G. Maunsell, William Henry Bird and Leslie William Killop were fined £1 and 10s costs for driving motorcars without a warrant of fitness, and Percy Henderson was fined 10s and 10s costs on a similar charge. Parking a motor-car in Queen Street otherwise than parallel to the kerb cost Valentine O’Loughlan 10s and 10s costs, Charles Francis Rosson was fined £2 and 10s costs for exceeding 30 miles an hour in a restricted area. Traffic Inspector J. McGregor said defendant was driving in an erratic manner. On a charge of riding a bicycle at night without a light, Mrs C. Sayer was fined 5s and 10s costs. For driving a motor lorry without being equipped with a proper tail light Frapk Harold Oliver was fined 5s and 10s costs. On a charge of operating a motorcycle without a proper tail light, Charles Bowring was' fined 5s and 10s costs and on a further charge of having no warrant of fitness he was fined 10s and 12s costs, For having no radio licenses the following were fined the amounts stated: K. T. Lees, 15s and 10s costs; K. Phillips, £2 and 10s costs; Horace Robinson, 15s and 10s costs. C. W. Adams pleaded not guilty to driving without a drivers’ licence and guilty to a further charge of failing to give way to the right. Mr T. Jordan, who appeared for defendant, said that visibility was restricted at the corner of Pownall and Cornwall streets where the accident occurred. Defendant had held a driver’s licence in 1936, but did not renew it- He was receiving tuition from his brother, a licensed driver when the accident happened. Mr Lawry dismissed the first charge and fined defendant £2 and 15s costs on the second 'charge. « Stated to have been following a girl 30 years his junior, Amos William Sealey appeared on two charges of behaving in an offensive manner in a public place. The charges were adjourned sine die.
Driving a motor-car without sufficient lights cost Ernest Alfred Eastwood £1 and 10s costs.
Donald Johnston Grant was fined £5 and 10s costs for cressing a railway line when the line was not. clear. A fine of 30s and 14s costs was imposed on Percy Thomas Gooding for failing to give way to traffic on his right at an intersection and 10s and 10s costs for not carrying a warrant of fitness.
CIVIL BUSINESS.
Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following undefended civil claims:—J. Graham and Co., Ltd. v. C. H. Thomas, claim £l9 9s 6d, costs, £2 16s; Smith and Donovan Services Ltd. v. A. T. Gorrie, claim £2 7s 6d, costs £1 7s 6d; J. Kelly Ltd. v. R. Terrill, claim £8 6s 4d, costs £1 12s 3d. On a judgment summons B. Waring was ordered to pay Hugo and Shearer Ltd. the sum of £8 2s 3d, ir. default 8 days’ imprisonment.
