BOROUGH AFFAIRS

MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL. WAIPOUA RIVER BRIDGE GRANT. The Mayor. Mr T. Jordan, presided at the monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, held last night. Others present were: Councillors Trevor Beetham, J. Ninnes, G. W. Morice, A. T. Jackson. H. E. Gardner, R. Russell, G. I). Wilson, W. Kemp, W. H. Judd, A. D. Low and W. White. Mr E. Spicer was given permission to cut down and remove for firewood a dead pine tree in Mawley Park provided the council accepted no responsibility and the removal was supervised by Councillors Russell and Gardner.

The Boy Scouts and Girl Guides Associations wrote expressing thanks for the use of the Social Hall for a dance.

The Women’s National Welfare League was granted the use of a room in the Municipal Buildings for meetings, provided the room was not otherwise engaged. It was decided to advise the Park Croquet Club that the council had gone into the question of laying down another green and providing additional sanitary accommodation and that it regretted that it could not see its way clear to accede to the requests. The construction of another lawn, it was stated, would mean the uprooting of several trees and the cost would be prohibitive. On lhe recommendation of the Park Committee it was decided to extend the hearse drive at the cemetery at an estimated cost of £2O.

A request by the St. John Ambulance Division for the use of a room for nursing auxiliary service was granted and the division will be given priority over other lettings. In reply to an application from the Wairarapa Cricket Association regarding the laying down of practice wickets at the Park the council decided to offer to water and roll the practice wickets twice a week if required but it could not see its way clear to excavate or otherwise prepare the wickets. The Association is also to be advised that in future batsmen using practice wickets must not wear boots with nails.

The' Gas* Companies’ Association of New Zealand wrote acknowledging the council's contribution of £25 towards the cost of the gas exhibit at the Centennial Exhibition, which was estimated at £5OOO. The sum of £3885 had already been received. The Town Clerk was instructed to write to Messrs T. Borthwick and Son asking them to furnish the council with a return of all meat supplied to Masterton butchers during the past three months.

'The Wairarapa Hospital Board advised that the council’s levy for the year had been assessed at £3565 as compared with £3196 12s, last year. The District Engineer, Public Works Department, wrote stating that an additional grant of £55 (£ for £) had been made available for the Waipoua River Bridge. The Minister of Public Works is to be thanked for the grant. The Wairarapa Hospital Board wrote expressing thanks for the erection of lights in Blair Street. In response to a request by the Masterton County Council, which is tak,ing action to improve visibility at intersections with Main Highways, it was decided that the engineer go into the question of having trees removed at the corner of Totara Street and Te Ore Ore Road.

An application by the Masterton branch of the Plunket .Society for a grant was referred to the estimates meeting for favourable consideration. The Mayor, Councillors Gardner and Wilson were appointed representatives to meet Ihq Masterton County Council and discuss the questioii of tree planting as a centennial memorial.
