ESPERANTO

MASTERTON CLUB MEETING. PROGRESS MADE BY CLASSES. The weekly meeting of the Masterton Esperanto Club was held last evening in the clubroom, Municipal Buildings, Mr A. Dewar, D.8.E.A., presiding over a satisfactory attendance. Announcing the receipt of correspondence in Esperanto from Holland and Sweden, the president stressed the advantages accruing from the use of Esperanto for the exchange of international communications. This was well demonstrated by the fact that the M-G-M film producer, Mr Clarence Brown, had received over 2000 letters and cards conveying congratulations from all parts of the world as a result of the introduction of a short dialogue in Esperanto in the Clark GableNorma Shearer film, "Idiot s Delight. In a brief address to members, the' secretary, Mr W. H. King, described the activities of the International Esperanto League, comprising 15,000 members in over 60 countries and with headquarters in London. The last issue: of the official organ of the League—a. 32-page journal published monthly wholly in Esperanto—recorded the extension in New Zealand of the I.E.L. consular organisation, which comprises representatives in the every town of importance throughout the world, by the appointment of delegates at Gisborne and Palmerston North and of three special delegates at Wellington to handle matters pertaining to railways, photography and Boy Scouts. Further tuition in the international language was provided an elementary class by Mr. Dewar, and an advanced circle studied under the direction of Mr King, substantial progress being reported at the conclusion of the tuition period. The concluding item, a reading contributed by Mrs E. J. Esler, entitled “La Blua Rubando,” related to a brief history of the coveted blue ribbon of the Atlantic, at present held by the "Queen Mary.”
