BOROUGH WORK

REPORTS FOR PAST‘MONTH. At last night’s meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, the Borough Engineer, Mr C. R. Mabson, reported as follows on work carried out during April:— Streets—Short Street roadway between South Road and High Street has been regraded, metalled, consolidated and tar-sealed. The flanks were also graded, metalled and sealed. Nine new private crossings were put in during the month. Queen Street has been resurfaced with honin, from the Power Board to the Kuripuni Triangle. High Street has also been treated with honin, from Cockburn Street to the Triangle. The Waipoua River works are progressing satisfactorily; the excavation of the channel and closing of the gap on the north side of the Colombo Road bridge will be completed this week. The suspension bridge sections have all been hung and are now being adjusted to give the proper camber in the deck. 'Building permits: During the month 4 permits were issued, having an estimated value of £4461. The fees thereon amounted to £7 ss. For the corresponding month last year 10 permits were issued, having an estimated value of £1737 ss.

BOROUGH INSPECTOR’S REPORT.

The Borough Inspector (Mr T. A. Russell) reported as follows: —Notifiable infectious disease: I again have the pleasure of reporting that no case of infectious disease occurred during the month. To date this month one case of pulmonary tuberculosis has been notified. Milk supply: The usual milk samples were taken for general analysis, the milk proving of a good quality. Dangerous goods: The licensing of dangerous goods premises has been completed, 46 premises being licenced to store dangerous goods. Fifty-four licences for the sale of dangerous goods under the Industrial Efficiency Act were also issued. Traffic: Heavy traffic fees for the month amounted to £46 9s 4d. Ten applicants for drivers’ licences were examined, three failing to pass the test. Five persons were prosecuted . for breaches of the traffic regulations. GAS MANAGER’S REPORT. The Gas Engineer-Manager (Mr J. Y. Douglas) reported:—Gas manufactured: Total gas made corrected N.T.P. was 3,725,300. being a decrease of 61,800 cubic feet or 1.6 per cent over the corresponding period of last year. Gas sold shows a decrease of 4 per cent. Government Inspector: The inspector visited the works on April 13. Calorific value of the gas was 454 B.T.U. and sulpherretted hydrogen was absent. General: The works are running very satisfactorily at the present time.. There are still a large number of meters in use over the seven-year period and to assist the meter repairer I have put one of the yard workers into the meter shop and so bring every meter up to date.
