OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS

THE PRICE OF SUGAR ALLEGED PROFITEERING DENIED. (To the Editor.) Sir, —I was very interested on reading in the paper that sugar has risen £3 per ton over the last month to the grocers, but what has it advanced to the consumer? Well, as I see it sugar has advanced one penny per pound to the consumer which means a rise of £9 Gs 8d per ton. a nice little extra profit of £6 6s 8d to the grocers. To me this seems like a clear ease of profiteering and would like to hear other people’s views on this subject, even from the Masterton Grocers’ Association. —I am, etc., SACCHARINE. The above letter was referred to the Grocers' Association, which points out that the price of sugar per lb. before the recent rise of £3 per ton was 4d. Today the price is 4Jd per lb. in small lots up to 121 b. and for larger quantities the increase works out at about 'd per lb. Masterion consumers, moreover, are paying the same price per lb. as Wellington consumers, in spite of freight costs, from Wellington to Masterton. which are £1 4s 9d per ton. This additional cost is borne by Masterton grocers and has been foi’ many years past.
