MEETING OF WAIRARAPA BOARD.

ROOF ON NURSES’ HOME. The chairman. Mr H. H. Mawley, presided at the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital Board, held today. Others present were: Messrs F. E. Bolton, J. F. Thompson, F. Court. W. Britland, W. B. Martin. W. I. Armstrong, D. McGregor, A. Forsberg. Trevor Beetham, Arch. Clark. P. R. Welch, Mesdames J. Robertson. S. Fletcher, Misses H. Card and C. McKenny.

The return of patients at the institutions controlled by the board for the month of April was as follows, the figures for the corresponding month of last year being given in parentheses: — Masterton Hospital: In hospital on March 31, 124 (106); admitted during April, 135 (114); total under treatment, 259 (220); discharged. 152 (91); remaining in hospital on April 30, 107 (129). Daily average, 114.03 (117.86). Greytown Hospital: In hospital on Marcli 31, 25 (26); admitted during April, 39 (29); total under treatment, 64 (55); discharged, 37 (29); remaining in hospital on April 30, 27 (26). Daily average, '25.1 (22.6). There were 59 inmates in the Buchanan Home at the end of April as compared with 55 at the same date last year.

Pahiatua Hospital: In hospital on March 31. 13 (15); admitted during April, 30 (22); total under treatment, 43 (37); discharged during month, 24 (23); remaining in hospital on April 30, 19 (14). Daily average, 16 (15). In his financial statement, the Man-aging-Secretary, Mr Norman Lee, said that maintenance . expenditure was in excess of receipts by the sum of £4,958 Is 9d. On capital account there was Jf credit balance of £1,870 15s 9d and in the loan account of £3,791 10s 3d. Payments from patients were well below the monthly average but that was usual at this period of the year. The Local Government Loan Board wrote sanctioning a proposal to raising a loan of £7,200 for a period of 15 years at 31 per cent. A letter was received from the Dir-ector-General of Health authorising a capital expenditure of £2,520 for temporary nurses’ quarters and alterations to the theatre and the kitchen at the Greytown Hospital. Authority was also received for an expenditure of £BOO on the dispensary at the Masterton Hospital. The tender of Jenkins Bros., of £620, was accepted for the work. “There seems to be an idea prevalent in the town that the whole roof of the Nurses! Home at the Masterton Hospital is useless,” remarked Mr ■Mawley. “That, however,” he added, “is not correct. It was only the waterproof covering that caused some trouble. There has been no serious leakage since December and the nurses have not been inconvenienced.” The Wellington Education Board advised that Miss Nancy Allen had been appointed a part-time teacher of the children at the Masterton Hospital. A committee was set up to arrange for tree planting on sections at the Greytown Hospital.
