PERSONAL ITEMS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr and Mrs J. B. Ritchie, of Northland, Wellington, are spending a fortnight in Featherston as the guest of Mr and Mrs C. W. Ritchie and Mr and Mrs A. C. Murphy. Mr J. Coleman, of Wellington, was a weekend visitor and stayed with Mr B. Williams, Kaiwaiwai. '■Mrs and Miss Wyne-Hesse, of Wellington, are on a visit to Mrs G. W. Brandon, “Lake Meadows.” Mr and Mrs H. Parrant, of Petone, accompanied by their daughter and son, Miss M. and Mr D. Parrant, were weekend visitors at “The Priory,” the home of Mr and Mrs C. R. Tocker. WOMEN’S DIVISION. monthly meeting. There was a fair attendance at the monthly meeting of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union which was presided over by Mrs E. M. Wakely (President). Several apologies for nonattendance were received. The treasurer’s report was presented and adopted. Mrs Q. Donald, tendered her resignation as treasurer, which was accepted with regret. Miss J. S. Goodrick was appointed to fill the vacancy. The remits which are to come up for discussion at the conference to be held in Wellington in July were presented. The meeting appointed Mesdames Arch Clark and E. M. Wakely to represent the branch at the conference. Mesdames R. Charles and A. R. Robbins were elected vice-presidents of .the branch. « Owing to other functions being held in the town, there was a poor display of flowers. The first prize for cut blooms was awarded to Miss J. S. Goodrick. It was decided to hold future meetings in the Parish Hall. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Arch Clark and J. W. Holland who 5 entertained those present to a dainty- afternoon tea. Football Matches. The Featherston juniors journeyed tc Grey town on Saturday' where they defeated the Greytown team by 3 points to nil. At Featherston the local thirds alsc registered a win by defeating Dalefield by 12 to nil. During the weekend a match was played at Cross Creek against Cross Creek who succeeded in beating the Featherston team by 11 points to 7. The game was played in a very friendlj manner. It is anticipated that the return match will be played at Featherston next weekend. HOCKEY GAME. LOCAL TEAM’S SPLENDID WIN. There was a good attendance to wit ness the first hockey match of the sea son to be played in Featherston whet the local girls met College C, and al though the game was somewhat raggec in the first half, the home team settler down in the second spell and played ; really good game. There were man; anxious and exciting moments anc just on the call of time Nancy Davis assisted by Doreen 1 Lowell, scored < goal which made the local team thi winners. The game was well controlle< throughout by Miss E. Yeoman am Mr G. W. Morice. The local girls wer warmly congratulated on their well deserved win. The Featherston girl are shaping very well indeed am should give a good account of them selves. They are certainly fortunate ii having Mr F. J. Staples as their coach He is keenly interested in the gam and is able to pass on excellent advie to the youthful players. Many year ago Featherston had one of the bes girls’ teams in the Wellington pro : vince and it is hoped to build up th present team to that standard. * Golf Results. The following are results of the firs ‘ round of the Victoria Cup and Shielc played on the Rototawai links on Sat 1 urday. Men:—J. Wilson, score 79, han ; dicap 7, total 72, G. O’Neale ;H. R. Pearc • 90-14-76, Mrs W. Pope 114-36-78. QUEEN CARNIVAL. POSITIONS OF CANDIDATES. The following are the positions i: the contest:—Miss Anne Fellinghan the “Blue” Queen, has jumped fror third to first position with 6400 vote: Miss Ngaire Tocker ("Red”) is nex with 5800, Miss Eileen Cole (“Yellow” 5741 and Miss Nancy Corlet ("Green” 1120. Mrs Roy Donald, “Gum Grove, • was hostess at a gathering held re ’ cently for Miss Eileen Cole, “Yellow 1 Queen. The evening was spent play Ling euchre, the winners being Mrs F I L. Williams and Mr M. Rae. Both th ' prize winners handed back their prize to be played for on some future occa - sion, for which they were accordea very hearty vote of thanks. Th ; Queen’s funds should be increaser considerably as there was a larg z crowd present. A raffle for a box o r chocolates was won by Mrs Ray Mel - lish. Woolshed Dances. Another successful dance was he! ’ in Mr Percy Fuge’s woolshed, Kahu tara Road, visitors being present fror - all over the Wairarapa. The musi 1 was supplied by Te Tau’s Orchestre - while the duties of M.C. were capabl; - carried out by Mr J. Fenwick. Ther was much fun and merry-making, al present thoroughly enjoying them selves. This effort was in aid of th - “Red” Queen's funds. ? Mr G. W. Brandon again loane- > his woolshed for another popula i dance which took place on Saturday night, the proceeds being for the "Yel
low” Queen, Miss Eileen Cole. There was a very happy crowd present, including parties, from- Wellington and various parts of the Wairarapa. Amongst the dancers was the “Blue” Queen, Miss Anne Fellingham. Mr Joe Buck, assisted by Mr R. Bannard, kept things in happy vein by their bright music. Mr C. Buck efficiently carried out the duties of M.C. There were lucky spot and -Monte Carlo dances during the evening. Owing to the popularity of these dances it was decided to hold another shortly. The following are the results of competitions which were drawn on behalf of Miss Eileen Cole: —Turkey, Mrs H. Tutbury; box of chocolates, Mrs Roy Donald; vase, C. Wilkinson. Season. The opening of the season will take place in the Town Hall on Tuesday night, when it is expected there will be a good attendance. Miss Jean Tutbury, the very capable secretary, is largely responsible for popularising the club, and has been instrumental in securing several new members. The annual meeting will also take place prior to the commencement of play. Hardie Golf Trophy. The following is the result of the first medal round for Mr T. Hardie’s trophy, held on Saturday:—D. Carlyon 88-20-68 nett, receives 3 points; J. B. Davis, 87-18-69 nett, and H. Lovegrove, 97-28-69 nett, receive 1J points each.
A club match with Carterton will be held next Saturday, the first eight laying at Featherston and the second eight at Carterton. Members who are unable to play are requested to notify the secretary.
