FIRE IN LEVIN
SHOPS SERIOUSLY DAMAGED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) LEVIN, This Day. The most disastrous fire for many years occurred in the heart of the business area of Levin at about midnight on Sunday, causing damage estimated at £4OOO. The fire had a good hold when the brigade arrived and was only suppressed after a two-hour battle. The outbreak started on premises occupied by Horton Foley, printer, and owned by G. K. Douglas. This shop was completely gutted. The fire extended to the roof of adjoining premises, owned and occupied by Fuen Key Leong, fruiterer. The roof was practically burnt out and there was extensive damage to stock by fire and water. Meanwhile the roof of a shop on the other side, occupied by W. Stannard, stationer, had caught, but was extinguished immediately. The stock, however, was damaged by water to the extent of about £BOO. There was insurance on Foley’s shop and stock, but the amount is not available at present. He will be a heavy loser. Leong’s stock was insured for £6OO and the shop for £lOOO. Stannard’s stock was covered to the extent of £l5OO.
