ERINATION ON RIGHT TRACK

(By

"The Cynic.”)

ZWith Erination engaged in both the Great Northern Hurdles and Steeplechase, Handicapper F. J. McMenamin did not have to look far for a topweight, and the Illumination gelding could scarcely be given less than th? 11.11 he has in the hurdles event, and the 11.13 allotted him in the 'crosscountry race. However, a hard task is set the topweight. One has to go back to the '9o’s, when Liberator won the hurdles with 12.9 and St Simon scored with 31b more. Since then, the only horses to win with over 11.0 have been Coeur de Lion (11.8), Royal Conqueror (11.4). Fisher (11.2), Kohi (11.2), and Make Up (11.5). When Erination was awarded 10.5 in

the Great Northern Hurdles last year, the handicapper had seen him score a six lengths' victory in the Brighton Hurdles with 10.9 a couple of months earlier. The Illumination gelding won theNorthern Hurdles in a great struggle with Huskie and Jolly Beggar and ran third to Valpeen and Bryce Street in the Steeplechase with 10.0. The following month he won the Wellington Steeplechase with 10.2, finishing ten lengths ahead of Santoft. Erination fell in the Grand National Steeplechase when going well, but he ran fourth with 10.13 in the National Hurdles; fourth in the Sydenham Hurdles with 11.2; and won the Lincoln Steeplechase with 11.3 from Santoft (10.5), and Bryce Street (10.1). During the spring meetings he won two more races, carrying 13.0, on the second occasion and being twice placed with 13.8 and 13.9? Has Good Flat Form. Silver Sight, who has been given 11.2 in. the Hurdles, has really good handicap flat form to recommend him, while he has shown good hurdling form this season. He won at Trantham. in the spring and went to score over brush hurdles at Riccarton at the Cup meeting. He was again returned a winner over brush hurdles at Easter, finishing strongly into second place the second day at Riccarton with 12.7. Esteem and Red Sun will be passed by, though the latter is a good stayer. On the other hand All Irish, is well in. even though his best form has been over steeplechase fences. Charade has her full measure of weight and she meets Silver Sight on much worse terms here than she does over the shorter distance at Awapuni. The winning effort of the Lord Quex more at Ellerslie at Christmas with 11.1 no doubt has influenced the handicapper, though Silver Sight’s flat form would seem to indicate that he would be the better stayer of/the two. , . POWER CHIEF WINS STEEPLES. PRINCIPAL RACE TO MEAMEA. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) OTAKI. May 14. The Otaki Maori Racing Club’s experiment of dividing its winter meeting into single-day fixtures was inaugurated on Saturday with considerable success.
